What Windows 10 default files contain lots of useful icons for shortcuts to be set to?

My copy has a set called ABC which has all the letters and numbers fro 0
to 9 on a plain folder, It came with the program when I installed it.
It was the Pro version which I bought after trying the free one.

What size is being displayed? You can't ask
Windows to resize the icon. You need to know
what size is currently in use. What if you pick a
system icon? Does that work? If not then
the problem may be that you're just not allowed
to change that icon.

I just tried it with my own icon on XP, but that
may be different from win10. In general, Windows
has allowed less customizing with each version.
But assuming you want to change a folder icon,
and that there's a customizing tab showing that
option, it should produce a "hidden" desktop.ini
file with something like the following:

IconIndex=0

(Again, that's on XP. I assume it's still the same
but I don't have 10 and haven't bothered to try

Tons of icon editors out there.

I personally use a vector program, CorelDraw to design icons. Export to
png. Use old version of IcoFx to convert to ICO and format multiple
resolutions. Then with IcoFx's resource editor add ICO to personal
library DLLs.

For folders in Explorer right-click Properties Customize Change
Icon ... and select icon from DLL.

All ICO files should have more than one icon. Different sizes.
The easy way to do it is go to the toolbar and click icon-create
windows icon.
This will by default make a whole series of images of different sizes
and qualities in one ico file. Check or uncheck any sizes you don't
want. But once okay'ed it will create the full ico file and you just
save and name it.
That's the simple way.

There's 1000 other things you can do.
Library on the toolbar is for making DLL files.

In GFIE you do File-new library.
Then you add ico files. Once done you save it as either icl or dll.

I will warn you. GFIE will sort icons by name in a library. Kind of a
bug in my opinion. As started elsewhere when you pick an icon out of a
dll you use MYIMAGE.DLL,20 for the 20th image. Well if GFIE resorts
your libary when you add a new icon, then #20 may not be #20 any more.
So when I make a new dll I number all the ico files like 01_box.ico
02_fire.ico 03_girl.ico etc. Then when I add them to the dll they sort
by the # and stay that way. The next ico I add will be 04_???.ico etc.

If you put 100 icons in a folder you can just all all at one time to a
new library. Do File-Save and pick in the drill down type icl,dll and
make sure you put the .dll on the end of your filename.

and made a copy and stripped out all MS icons and inserted my own. I
used Resource Hacker to edit the version and description info block in
the DLL. But ICL will do.

I was easily able to set the icon of a shortcut to one of those three
icons.
Shortcut: Properties, Change Icon, %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\gitfolder.ico,
(select any of the three icons), OK, OK

This works where the only remaining question is whether freeware exists to
perform the conversion of the ico file to a icl (or dll) file?
