Default usb device not recognized

This has happened several times recently. Message refers to printer -
Brother HL-2240. Turning it off and on doesn't return it so service. I
assume I'll have to restart computer. The message occurs after computer is
on for several hours.

Anything I can do? Suggestions welcome.

TIA

Using Control Panel says it is off line. Tried setting there for offline
printing but despite three documents that didn't happen.

How long is the cable and have you tried another one? These printers
don't like repeater cables much. I ended up putting mine on a network
adapter.

Probably 6 - 10' long. They are about 4' apart on my deck. This worked
fine for many years until recently. I'll try to dig out the cable and
replace it.

Is there any way to return the printer to life when this happens
without the long annoying process of shutting down and restarting the
computer and XL?

TIA

I found one way. Unplug and replug USB cable. XL then reinstlls printer
and it works. Pretty quick but probably not a good thing to keep
repeating.

You can buy a "USB switch", which has like 1 input and 2 outputs.
The concept of the device, is it was invented to allow
one printer to be shared with two computers, and the "button"
on the top flips the selector. Since each "flip" of the
electronic box represents a re-insertion, it takes the
place of unplugging and re-plugging the cable. Press the button
twice, returns the configuration to the original state, but
the OS thinks the printer has been unplugged and re-plugged.

They come in 1 print to 2 computers, 1 printer to 4 computers,
4 printers to 2 computers and so on.

Usually the button on top is flimsy (now, who would have
guessed that, from China and all). But if you wanted an alternative,
that's the only one that comes to mind. KVM boxes have wiring in
that sort of shape too, but I don't know how you'd (ab)use a KVM
to achieve the same end. The switch device is also a lot cheaper
than a KVM, so it's no contest there.

Now, let's see if they still make them. I select one at random.

One review says "cheap button", so at least it's consistent with industry norms.

Looks "pretty" here. Presentation is everything.

This picture shows the logical representation. That's
why I went looking for a manual, to see if they'd explain it.
It switches up to four peripherals, between two computers,
but your printer would be plugging into the four port
box and using only one of the ports.

This would be how you'd wire it up. Note - if a USB peripheral
is bus powered, it *may* need to have a +5V supply plugged into
the LED box. However, you're running a printer, and a lot of
them have their own AC cord, in which case practically zero power
will be drawn from Computer #1 connector. If you put four USB
disk drives off the bottom of this box, it would need a *ton* of
power. Don't do that :-)

Switch box top side cables ----------- cable_with_big_button

printer delay between each press. The computer
to female needs time to "lose" and "gain" the
port on peripheral!

I could kick start mine most of the time by moving the cable to the
next USB port. It would reload the driver and work for a while.

A lot of them? I don't think I've seen _any_ *printer* that runs from
the USB 2½ watts. I have seen (_very_ expensive!) portable printers
intended for travelling salesmen, but I _think_ they have always had
either their own PSU or contained something rechargeable.

(Webcams, of course, and even scanners [I have one], _do_ run from a USB
alone, which I consider impressive engineering.)
