Default activation error in normal mode

trying to help a friend from a distance (he lives in another state) so I
cannot tell you exactly what the message is but when he trys to start XP in
normal mode it says you must activate windows and when he does he gets an
error:

An error is preventing you from activating error code 0x80004005

any ideas on how to fix this?

Thx Derrick
