Odd file copy behaviour
Ok, this is the 2nd time I've explicitly seen this happen. I'm copying a large file (1Gb) to a second pc's shared folder. As that's going on I also start to copy the file to a 2nd hard disk on the local pc. This 2nd copy finishes much sooner than the first going by the "details and amount left to copy and speed of copy" dialog. Thing is when this 2nd copy to the local hard disk finishes so does the networked copy. e.g. both dialog boxes disappear and both copies appear to have finished correctly!!! The networked copy is obviously not correct when one tries to play it and in fact Explorer cannot even display it's playtime length. Do another copy by itself over it and this copy is done correctly. Anyone else ever notice this behaviour? Anyone got any ideas why it happens? |

Question is still WHY? The OS shouldn't be doing that. I did a quick test here back when you first reported this and could not reproduce it. Consequently, there was nothing to report back to you. Obviously, Explorer should not do this. I could understand it happening, if the completion of one transaction... caused Explorer to crash )which might take down a second copy in flight). But I think you would notice and recognize the symptoms of an Explorer crash if you saw one. I've had Explorer crash on WinXP a ton of times. I've also had a file transaction (15GB file copy) take out the OS and cause a BSOD - the root cause on that one was actually bad RAM, in whatever area the buffers live in. Replacing the RAM stopped that one, and it hasn't come back. But Explorer can still crash. Sometimes it crashes when I exit the last program on the desktop. The problem is intermittent. Paul |

Replacing the RAM stopped Both these pcs pretty stable, days if not weeks running 24/7. Usually power outage takes em down with Updates restarting them is all. The 2nd pc is actually almost exclusively used to watch video on tv and play music thru a stereo. I seldom even use the kepboard on it and it stays tucked away almost always. Only oddity about this 2nd pc is that it doesnt' behave well as a Master Browser which may have some pertinence but I'm not into it that much to figure that kind of an issue thru. |

Anyone else ever notice this behaviour? Anyone got any ideas why it happens? I last observed that on NT4, years ago. I thought it had been corrected, ages ago. Once I was able to repeat the error on my NT4 machine, I stopped using copy/paste in that manner and switched to xcopy/xxcopy for more reliability. I also noticed they were faster in doing the task for me. I'm somewhat surprised to learn that bug might? still be present in a far later/greater OS as claimed by MS. -- Don't become the next David Brooks cyberstalking victim! Anyone else ever notice this behaviour? Anyone got any ideas why it happens? Yeah, you asked about this on Jan 30th. No idea why it does this; could it be caused by your Anti-Virus? I'd have to do tests here to see if I can reproduce, never really noticed this, but I don't really copy the same files twice at the same time (altho I do sometimes run multiple copies of different files concurrently.) If it is not the Anti-Virus and it's a bug in Explorer, I can't say I'm totally surprised lol. Best Regards, -- ! _\|/_ Sylvain / ! Anyone else ever notice this behaviour? Anyone got any ideas why it happens? Yes. Try reversing the order. Start the copy to the internal drive first then the external drive. As I recall It's a race (buffer) situation on the bus but I can't remember exactly what the cause was but it didn't happen on smaller files. You didn't mention the age of the hardware or configuration but as I recall it was on Dell hardware (???) but that was several years back. So try reversing the order and test the original way using some smaller files. It doesn't run out of buffer space as fast. What type of drives are you using and what is the path to the 2nd PC? Wireless router, switch, direct connect...? -- Bob S. |
