My wife has been getting a pop-up message box on her Win XP computer,
over and over again. It says:

The page requires a secure connection which includes server
authentication.
The Certificate Issuer for this site is untrusted or unknown. Do you
wish to proceed?

It has "Yes", "No", "View Certificate", and "More Info" buttons. "View
Certificate" shows that the cert in question was issued to
"javadl-esd-secure.oracle.com", and issued by "Geo Trust SSL CA".

I've told her to click "No" and get rid of the message. But it keeps
coming up over and over again. The domain name looks like maybe Java
is trying to update itself.

What can be done about this?

Insufficient information Tim.

What is being used when this Pop-Upo appears ? IE, Firefox ?

Can you post a URL to a screenshot ?

Are you using Oracle Java v7 update 25 and ONLY that Java version ?

She says it happens even when she's not running any browser.

My employer blocks access to anyplace where I could store an image.

No idea what Java version she has.

They give the impression here, it comes from Java 6, and they
suggest updating to Java 7. Did Java 6 even have Auto Update ?
Maybe there'd be evidence of some startup item (Autoruns).

Maybe... but that article mentions Win7 and Vista with UAC turned on.
This is an XP system. Still might be the problem.

AFAIK, she doesn't use any sites with Java applets. I think I'll tell
her just to uninstall it, and install the latest version if she runs
into something that needs it.

In add/remove programs you may find Java 6 and the update level. Mine on
multiple machines is at 37 with an earlier version that didn't clear.

In searching support for some other issues it was suggested that you
should allow Java7 to install but keep 6 for those sites that still use
it.

Is is no longer suggested to use v6 but if one *MUST* it should be the last
in that family, v6 update v45.
