Default Windows XP Pro SP2 problems

I installed SP2 and now IE6 won't work anymore. Checked exemptions, ipconfig
and I can even ping my ISP fine but nothing else happened. If I reboot my
computer I will get one shot at one web site, usually MSN home and after
that...nothing.
The only way everything works again is unistalling the SP2, any ideas

General posts again indicate that running any operating system upgrade, as
always, can be a disaster.

Wipe the system and clean install.

Get AutoStreamer then get SP2 update.
Get your original XP CD.
Use Auto-streamer to build your XP SP2 installation CD.
Nice clean installation now possible.

And disable auto updates.
Use Norton Antivirus client 9 + ZoneAlarm +Mailwasher for trouble limiting
internetting.

Round this off with Drive Image Professional preferably imaging to a second
hard drive.
Takes four minutes to replace my entire installation.

A clean install to goto SP2 is not needed and is way overkill. Most home
novice users will have no clue how to do this, nor do they want to.
And the only reason you see lots of sp2 problems in here, is because it's a
problem newsgroup. The ones with no problems, don't post. In my experience,
the users with no problems far outway the users with problems.
You have posted good info, but users should only need to format and clean
install if they get a catastrophic error. Otherwise a clean install is not
needed to upgrade to sp2.

This appears to be fairly common... reinstall the IP Stack:

1) Run Regedit
Go to HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services
Delete the keys "Winsock" & "Winsock2"
2) Reboot
3) Go to Network Connections
Install|Protocol|Have Disk
Navigate to C:\Windows\Inf
Choose Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
Save/Close
4) Reboot
5) Click Start|Run then type:
Netsh int ip reset TCPIP.txt
6) If you have static ip's, DNS or WINS setting, you will have to reenter
them.

The log file TCPIP.txt will be created in Documents & Settings\YourUserName

This works 99% of the time for me.

Google for the apps lspfix.exe and winsockxpfix.exe. Run both in
default mode. One or the other should fix the TCP/IP stack.
