Disconnect all "services" from a specific network card
Hello all,
For the purpose of proxying / sectioning off an untrusted device I would like to "disconect" *one* of my installed ethernet cards from all (default) services (especially IPC) running on my computer (XP Pro). At the same time I would ofcourse still like to be able to have userland programs communicate thru (open ports on) that ethernet card. Is this possible, and if so how ? Regards, Rudy Wieser |

JJ,
No. Because there's no standard method to make other process' to stop listening to a network port. There is ! Just shut down the service(s). :-) (and yes, on an experimental setup thats exactly what I did). And I'm not asking for a "kick a process off" method (which, by the way, I have seen described somewhere) as it would *at best* be prone to problems, both in the "will it or won't it close the port" department, as well as in the attack window that will exist between the time a process (system service) opens a port, and the "kick it off" moment. I'm inquiring to a method by which I can *tell the OS* to tell the services not to make the connection. Using a 'puter to proxy (monitor and/or filter) network traffic is not that uncommon. Must I assume that Windows is incapable of doing anything of that kind ? Regards, Rudy Wieser -- Origional message: JJ schreef in berichtnieuws ...
