Quick question: poor man's disk wipe?

If you want to dispose of it, whack it with a hammer. No, definitely don't want to whack it with a hammer, want to reuse afterwards. Future reuse will automatically take care of overwriting previous data, of course, but I want previous data locations to be unknown. Thinking a change in filesystem formats would scramble up the locations of previous data, making it impossible to restore, except by sector-by-sector analysis. Yousuf Khan Hi Yousuf, Well, if yo use it enough, you will eventually overwrite everything, but it will take a while. I have had to use the dd method on some weird Windows formatted disks before as they were not readable by the OS. This happens to me a lot when a take a Frankenstein the Elder (w8) disk and try to do an install of Windows 7 on it. dd it is! Some Apple formats do this too. There are some Windows utilities out there that will scramble all the empty space on your disk. I have one, but I forgot what it is called. I can look it up for you if you wish. -T Does anyone other than you bother with the "Franken" slur? Don't you think it's about time to quit trying to push your childish lingo onto others? No one is adopting it. Are you working for the M$ Marketing Police today? Someone **** in your wheaties this morning? Go find your sense of humor. A good cup of tea will help. Do you keep using personal lingo when no one else adopts it? Maybe that's why you're avoided at parties. You don't have the audience size or endurance of Lewis Carroll. Neologisms work only if you can effect change through literature or media or can effectively influence a large audience. You've failed. Move on. You're supposed to be a contracted consultant to customers (who comes here to obtain help). Do you use your Franken lingo with your customers to deliberately confuse them? Elevate your professionalism. Accusing someone of being a Microsoft fanboy is a last resort inane insult. Just detracts from being professional. A very strong ditto to everything you say above. And one additional point: We all have different senses of humor. What I think is funny the next person might not. T thinks that anyone who doesn't have the same sense of humor he does has no sense of humor. That's absurd, and sound like the opinion of a six-year-old. You two should stay away from the Wheaties. Working harder at making everyone think you're a six-year old? Dear Messrs. Cranky Pants, Harmless jabs at your favorite product(s)/brand(s) are not juvenile or slurs. You call them harmless, but I don't think they're harmless at all. I think they are designed to turn people away from those products. They don't achieve that goal for everyone, but they probably do for some. Three other points: 1. Microsoft is not my favorite brand. They do many things wrong, as far as I'm concerned. 2. Windows 10 is not my favorite product. As much as I like it, there are many things about it that I would change. 3. Even if they were my least favorite brand or product, I would feel the same way. I'm against any such poor-attempt-at-humor-jabs at *any* brand or product. If you, or anyone else, want to point out *real* deficiencies (not fake deficiencies, as so many people who don't know what they're talking about do) in a product (any product), I have no problem with it. But remember that this is a newsgroup whose purpose is to help people with problems, not to rant about deficiencies. Deficiencies should only be pointed out in a thread where someone asks about a problem, and the deficiency is related to the question. As a single example of what I mean by that last statement, in the Windows 10 newsgroup, I never rant about how terrible I think Edge is. But if someone has a problem with Edge, I often suggest that the best solution to the problem is to use a different browser, not Edge Is this profile you, Ken? https://social.technet.microsoft.com...icrosoft%20MVP -- Sometimes man stumbles over the truth. You have no actual interest in Ken. You want to strike up a conversation with Ken such as "*Why* does Winston have 29 email addresses". In other words, you want to "pump" Ken, like a country well, with that big pump handle. This is why you keep asking random people to look at some particular web pages - people who would have no interest or knowledge of the web pages. You expect Ken to "satisfy your fetish". I think they are designed to turn people away from those products. Dear Mr. Cranky Pants, Not in the slightest. I deal with a lot of people in my business travels. Their biggest issues is usually with I.T. people. Lets face it, in the aggregate, our profession is a bunch of arrogant ass holes. One of the things that gets me repeat customer and referrals is that I respect my customers and do not treat them like idiots. Lets face it, some of the things my customers do, I could never do in 1000 years. Does that make me an idiot? Now what does that have to do with harmless jags at certain technologies/companies. Well, the user is typically pretty upset when they call me. By listening to their emotional responses to what happened, I am validating them. I become a technology friend they can trust. If I act like they are idiots, there is nothing wrong with the technology, and it is all their problem, I would never get called back. The harmless names are noting more than harmless names. NO ONE in my 22 years of this has stopped using a Windows product because I made playful fun of it. NO ONE has been turned away from Windows because I don't like M$'s products. But they do trust me because I do not act like a marketing rep. Most business have no choice but to use Windows. All the business apps are on Windows. And to be quite frank, no one cares what operating system they are using AS LONG as it runs their apps. The jabs are meant for humor and validation, not to get folks unto other systems. They don't achieve that goal for everyone, but they probably do for some. Three other points: 1. Microsoft is not my favorite brand. They do many things wrong, as far as I'm concerned. That is a reasonable evaluation, 2. Windows 10 is not my favorite product. As much as I like it, there are many things about it that I would change. Also a reasonable evaluation. 3. Even if they were my least favorite brand or product, I would feel the same way. I'm against any such poor-attempt-at-humor-jabs at*any* brand or product. You seems to complain more about jabs at M$'s stuff than others, but I will give you that. But you can't have it both ways. Stating "they are designed to turn people away from those products" is bordering on tech evangelism. If you, or anyone else, want to point out*real* deficiencies (not fake deficiencies, as so many people who don't know what they're talking about do) in a product (any product), I have no problem with it. But remember that this is a newsgroup whose purpose is to help people with problems, not to rant about deficiencies. Deficiencies should only be pointed out in a thread where someone asks about a problem, and the deficiency is related to the question. Windows is what it is. I agree with your that this group is to help folks. Ranting is not helpful. Harmless jabs are not rants. They are humor and validation. As a single example of what I mean by that last statement, in the Windows 10 newsgroup, I never rant about how terrible I think Edge is. But if someone has a problem with Edge, I often suggest that the best solution to the problem is to use a different browser, not Edge I get a lot of complaints about Edge too. It is not ready for prime time. If they are hermetically addicted to IE or have some specific IE only site they must use, I remove the Edge icon and give them back their IE icon. Otherwise I install Firefox for them. Chrome is okay, but a bit stripped for my tastes. I do not say or imply with facial expressions, etc., that the reason they are having trouble with Edge is because they are idiots |

The reason give was "I think they are designed to turn people away from those products." And that I was "smearing" and "acting like a 6 year old". This is all the trade mark police. Not that my jokes were old. One of the mistakes new wives make with their husbands is to laugh at their jokes. Then they discover they get to listen to the same jokes over and over and over for the rest of their lives. The Windows Nein is just to poke M$ marketing staff in the eye for the bull s*** reason they foist on us for skipping nine. The Frankenstein actually serves two purposes. The first is that it is funny, the second is to acknowledge the stitched together aspect of Nein that is causing so much havoc. I have a customer that does not laugh at anything. "I get the joke, it is just not funny" whilst every one else is laughing their asses off around her. Her downfall is that she laughs her butt off at dumb kid jokes. So I endeavor to have one ready for her every time I visit. It has become a ritual. I dare her not to laugh. So far I am 100%. I will work on more creative material. |
