Win10 upgrade notes
I've recently upgraded several Win7 Pro machines to Win10 Pro and though
the free upgrade deadline is supposedly passed, all the machines were permanently activated once the upgrade was completed. I had used the upgrade tool one some machines and others were upgraded from a burned 1703 ISO. The upgrade tool (Win10upgrade24074.exe) had one minor glitch if there was incompatible software such as Google Earth. The upgrade simply failed with the message "incompatible software." Upgrading from the DVD was better as it actually listed the specific problem. As it turns out in the case of Google Earth, there is no stand-alone application in Win10, one simple accesses it through the Chrome browser. |

It was originally installed in Win7 and has kept on working after upgrading to Win10 and all subsequent updates to 1703. Clicking on Properties shows the following Target: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Google Earth\client\googleearth.exe" WFM |

No. I did nothing to prep the Win7 installations other than to remove Google Earth in that one case. In addition to several machines that I upgraded from Win7 to Win10 I tried an experiment with an spare XP machine. I upgraded it to Vista , then Win7 and finally Win10 Though there were small problems with the upgrade to Vista and Win7 by the time Win10 was installed, everything was fine. |

Google has made some changes and appears to no longer support the desktop version, at least for non-Pro users. For all new features, you MUST use it through Chrome. I am using Win10 Pro and it seems to work just fine through Chrome so I am not going to bother to even try to install the stand-alone version. |

Thanks for the warning on the fact Google Earth standalone version is being dropped and made a plug in for Chrome. Since my system does not run Chrome and I depend heavily on the Standalone Google Earth, I downloaded the last version and has stored it with my other valuable software. I have dozens of pins, and lines on my Google Earth. The lines outline properties of ancestors, and the pins locate family members and ancestors. I also would hate to give up the historic aspects of Google earth, the Sky, and similar items. -- 2017: The year we lean to play the great game of Euchre |
