Default Got the Win8.1-to-Win10 update tab today.

They want me to "reserve" my copy TODAY (LOL) !!

Probably won't use it.

I use Windows Media Center to record TV to an external drive. OS is
Win 8.1 PRO (Dell factory installed) with all current updates.

PC is a Dell XPS-8500, 2.5 yrs old, i7-3770, 24 GB, nVidia 640 video
card. New enough to work for my needs and not old enough to justify a
replacement so soon. I'd say a new system in maybe 2-3 yrs, based on
how fast stuff wears out or the hardware evolves (i.e. new type of
memory or video card, etc).

MS is saying Windows Media Center won't run on Win10, so I see no
valid reason to upgrade. Win 8.1 does what I want and the upgrade to
Win10 breaks it. Plus, I would likely need to buy a new PC in 2-3
years anyway (historic pattern of replacement), which means I need to
buy a new OS at that time anyway.

NOT buying Dell again. This PC needed a new mb (which did NOT fix the
problem), and I had all sorts of problems with the external USB3
ports and external hubs (all USB3.0 certified--no drivers needed or
available for Win8/8.1 PRO). Had to restore the C drive to factory
condition from the recover petition. Might build my own or have it
built. Last PC was a Vista system that ran 5 yrs with virtually no
problems. Needed a new system due to USB3.0, memory-slot format
changes (DDR3), and so on.

Um, there hasn't been any hardware progress in years. I see
no reason to throw away an i7-3770. Not in the immediate future.

In this page, the processors are separated by a launch date
difference of two years. Now, how much better is the new
processor ?

You have 24GB of RAM. The OS uses 1GB for itself, and
even in Windows 10, will still be taking about that much
for itself when no "memory pressure" is present. You still
have a comfortable margin. And Microsoft must keep the
"diet" for memory under control, so they can continue to
sell Walmart Black Friday tablet for $100.

You can change the video card if you want. If you're
a gamer. Maybe some day you will buy an 8K LCD monitor
which is 20 feet wide or something :-) And a new card
will help drive it. Although I expect the next big thing
to be VR helmets, rather than LCD monitors. Lots of
people working on those.
