Default Version compatibililty

I am running Windows 2003 Server and now I am prompted with a dialog box when
I try to sign-in indicating that I MUST download/install the latest version
to continue. When I click 'yes' that I want to do this now the installation
fails. So the net effect is that I cannot sign info Messenger any more. There
isn't an 'about' page that tells me the version but I remember that v8.xxxx
specifically indicated that it supports Windows 2003. If this is wrong should
I install v7.xxxx or v5.xxxx?

Thank you.

Kevin
