Windows Doesn't Automatically Update
My pc has Windows 10 home, version 1803 17134.795. I don't use it
often, maybe a few times a week, but it's on 24x7, and set to auto update. I don't think I could stop the updating anyway. But, every time I check the update status, it says last updated 'many many days ago, you are up to date'. Today is 5/29 and it says last updated 5/14, and up to date. If I press check for updates, it brings down three updates, one a windows 10 update, another a windows defender update, and another an Intel update. I thought it would always just update by itself without any interaction by me. |

I thought it would always just update by itself without any interaction by me. Patch Tuesday is a major patch date. That's probably 5/14, without me looking at a calendar. Clicking the "Update Windows" button makes you a "Seeker". The update policy is more aggressive for seekers. There is some baloney about "Hours of Use". At one time, the concept was, you defined your hours when you wanted to use the machine, and the other hours would somehow be for maintenance (a maintenance window). But it's never worked that way, and attempts to "automatically figure out when you use the computer", lead to the maintenance window being set to collide with your usage of the computer (I think they were testing that on the Insider at some point). There are various knobs and levers to "delay" updates or upgrades, but not to stop them forever. It's a kind of "sham control". Kinda like placing a steering wheel in a self driving car, so the person sitting in there has something to twiddle while the car drives itself. Updates can show up at any time, and rest assured, the system checks in often enough, it's not going to miss something really important. And even when you click a button on that OS, it has a mind of its own. Part of my day, my downloads don't count towards my Internet cap. And the Insider Edition, always starts doing crap to push the downloads into the "pay for bandwidth" part of the day. There is a perverse relationship between clicking buttons and when the OS "gets around to doing stuff". Would twiddling your Hours Of Use help ? I tested that on the Fisher Price Busy Box and the result was, my dinner still arrived at the same time. ("Hours of Use" is the spinner on the upper right, while the "Check For Updates" is the blue button on the lower left. Any saliva left on the controls is an autonomic function I cannot control.) https://www.reddit.com/r/nostalgia/c...rice_busy_box/ Paul |

However, it won't do anything if your SoftwareDistribution folder is corrupted. You can recreate this folder by logging in as Administrator and then right-Click on the Taskbar and choose Task Manager (this is 3rd item from bottom). then click on the two items I have high-Lighted in this pictu [ alt-no ] https://i.imgur.com/gMPnTqf.png From the Services, you need to browse for Windows Update by scrolling down the list in the Services panel. Right-Click on it and choose Stop. this will stop the service temporarily. Then go to the Windows folder and rename a folder called SoftwareDistribution. Please note you are only renaming the folder so nothing is lost or destroyed. Now restart the machine and voila, windows will start looking for the updates for you and also recreate the folder you have just renamed. Once the update is done, the renamed folder can then be deleted. Good muck. Chelsea 4 - 1 Arsenal Saturday is the big one when my Team (Liverpool) plays Tottenham. -- With over 950 million devices now running Windows 10, customer satisfaction is higher than any previous version of windows. |

Some cleaning helps always, the folowing steps can be executed without any harm: 1) Flush DNS Cache Step 1: Type "cmd" without quotes in search box. Step 2: Right click on cmd(command prompt), and then click on "Run as Administrator." Step 3: Now, Type command "ipconfig /flushdns" without quotes. Step 4: Hit "Enter" on the Keyboard. Close box, open webbrowser (to auto load new extra DNS servers), close bowser. 2) Free up space with Storage sense https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...up-drive-space Select all First time is takes often a long time and likely it gets never to the end of te proces. After 15 minutes, Reboot PC again: Free up space with Storage sense Now the proces works normal. 3) Go into c:\Windows\Temp Select all files, delete all files, accepting etc. (if posible) 4) set the option show hidden files on Go to c:\users\accountname\Appdata\Temp Select all files, delete all files, accepting etc. (if posible) Reboot PC Run the update button. After the last update reboot anyway and log in. After login win10 can resume the (rest) update proces for 5 minutes underneath. -- MdW. |

So when I power up I tell it to update with the intention of getting it done fast, and then do my business. It is not my intention to get "beta" updates. -- Cheers, Carlos. |

If that is so, then you may be missing some updates that are prerequisites to installing the latest set of updates which would then bring your PC up to version 1903. Well, the sad part is, it was supposed to be aggressively pursuing updates for itself. Yet, the users find themselves in all sorts of messes. What to do ? Help people one at a time, offer them a DVD to use, and so on ? It's not really possible to read a single indicator, and get an idea as to what went wrong. Some keep spreading the idea that "your fate is deserved", "your hardware stinks and is too old". I see no evidence this is true. I see some hardware is blocked - for example, a certain Intel chip is using third-party GPU hardware (maybe an IP block was purchased to make a GPU and that company only provided one set of drivers to go with them). But other than the extremely rare things like that Intel flop, I think even if the next OS version has to revert to the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, you should still be able to get the OS to install. https://www.tenforums.com/installati...09-1903-a.html You have ten days to "revert" the OS, if it doesn't look good or you're dissatisfied with the result. Although a backup could be a faster way to restore things to where you were previously. https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/...dows-10-a.html Paul |

As the machine was not frequently used, I noticed the problem a year later, and needed manual action to get the update done. -- Cheers, Carlos. |
