[OT] concerting xlsx to to xls files

Well, that's an opinion. Everyone is entitled to one. Yes but one has to ASS-U-ME that the OP had need of doing what was asked and his need was not helped by that post so while everyone is entitled to an opinion some are better not expressed. Yep. We are in agreement. That was pretty much my point - that I tend to assume that OP's have a reason for their requests. Yet, people on these forums always end up questioning people's intentions. Years back I worked at a place that used a very old version of MS Office and I could access their files to work from my home PC. They could not read .docx or .xlsx files. Since their entire computing network and all software was dependent upon donations, upgrading was not an option. Indeed. Quite so. It is not at all hard to imagine dozens of perfectly valid reasons why OP wants to do what he says he wants to do. -- The randomly chosen signature file that would have appeared here is more than 4 lines long. As such, it violates one or more Usenet RFCs. In order to remain in compliance with said RFCs, the actual sig can be found at the following URL: http://user.xmission.com/~gazelle/Sigs/GodDelusion |

Often people ask a question without realising there are broader solutions to their problem. Finding out why is an appropriate question. Years back I worked at a place that used a very old version of MS Office and I could access their files to work from my home PC. They could not read .docx or .xlsx files. Since their entire computing network and all software was dependent upon donations, upgrading was not an option. Indeed. Quite so. LibreOffice is free and reads all office formats. It is better than Microsoft at reading old .doc and .xls files. It is not at all hard to imagine dozens of perfectly valid reasons why OP wants to do what he says he wants to do. There could be, or the OP could be unaware of other options. |

However after I closed it and tried again, I got a 'this is not a recognised file format'. did you save it as an xls file? No, I didn't need to as I had already created an xls in OpenOffice Calc under Linux but that is tedious if I need it in Windows. -- Mint 19.1, kernel 4.15.0-51-generic, Cinnamon 4.0.9 running on an AMD Phenom II X4 Black edition. |

I have two copies of Microsoft Office 2000 and 2003. I used to be able to convert xlsx file to xls with a converter but that was a while ago under XP. I have tried to find some way of doing it recently but nothing seemed to work. I wondered if there was anyone who remembers some way of doing it that may still work. You can use 2003 to save the xlsx file as xls. No converter required. -- best regards, Neil |

LibreOffice is free and reads all office formats. No, it does not. I like OpenOffice and LibereOffice and have used both but their claims of compatibility are only partially true, passing XLS or DOC files back and forth between PCs running MS Office and Open/Libre will result in totally corrupted unusable files unless the files are very basic with extremely limited formatting.
