Default Problem with W-10 and Classic Shell

I'm starting to feel desperate. My work laptop is W-10 with Classic Shell.
I can't stand the W-10 interface. Too much clicking to find what I use
constantly. I stick with the Classic. I had a load of my work folders on
the desktop. I referenced them constantly. At work today one of the guys
was eating an orange and sprayed the monitor with a fine spray of juice. He
grabbed a napkin and started to dry it off. This is a touch screen so
something happened and Classic Shell disappeared and some tiles showed.
Four of us couldn't undo whatever he did. We couldn't get Classic Shell to
show nor all my work folders back on the desktop. I unistalled CS and
reloaded it but can't get it to show. The damn tiles remain. Only the Start
Button changed.

And what's with there being no X on so many pages in W-10? How do you close
these windows other than hitting the --- arrow? Some can't be minimized,
only closed.

None of us could find System Restore or anything like it. Where is it in
W-10? The guy with the most comp' experience couldn't fix the problem
either. We finally all had to quit and I'm still on square one.

How do I fix this problem? Where is System Restore?

Thanks.

Right-click the Start Orb, type

control

and return, and that gives control panels.
Right-click the item in the TaskBar and select the
option to pin it there, for the next time. Control Panels
used to be in a menu, but they removed it for "fun".

*******

In the System control panel, is the item you seek.

https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/...dows-10-a.html

https://www.tenforums.com/attachment...protection.png

Note that:

1) Win10 likes to switch System Protection off.
Most of the time, you'll have no restore points at all
available to you.
2) Unlike WinXP (which makes daily automatic restore points),
Windows 10 is weekly, so you have to roll back a minimum
of a week.
3) Restore points are "incremental". The further back in time
you go, the more of them that need to load to complete the
operation. Just in case you might wonder why a three-month
old one fails.
4) Restore points, when restored while the system is running
in normal mode, can be unrolled again. You can test a restore
point, and so the theory goes, return to the present time
using a similar operation while the system is running. I'm
sure there are a wealth of corner cases in there, to make
life interesting.

You're on your own, researching what items are included in
there. If you keep personal folder structures outside of
My Documents, then there could be side effects to your
personal folder contents. Since you're at work, your
profile is probably roaming and safe on the server.

There used to be a good web page done by an MVP, for the
WinXP system restore. But he didn't do that on a continuous
basis, so articles for Win10, you might have to look
at the bottom of the tenforums tutorial page for that
sort of information.

*******

For any item that lacks the "X":

alt-F4 is your friend

If a program has the focus, then alt-F4 closes the program.
I was using that in Windows 8, until the 8.1 update brought
the "X" back again.

If you click the desktop and type alt-F4, you will get
the shutdown menu. Note that after some Windows 10 updates, the
conventional regular menu loses the ability to shutdown...
but alt-F4 saves the day, by bringing up the alternate menu.
We'd be screwed if they ever removed the alternate menu.

As for the individual with the "food control problem",
computers and food don't mix. Some places have strict
food policies (no eating in the lab, because you're
handling lead and solder, and you could end up ingesting
the same). Never mind the cracker crumbs under the
keyboard keys...

Press WinKey+Pause, then click on System Protection. You'll find System
Restore there. Whether or not it'll fix your problem, I'm not sure, but it
won't hurt anything to try.

Googled. This doesn't work since there is no "create a restore point" there
to choose.

How to enable System Restore on Windows 10
1.. Open Start.
2.. Search for Create a restore point, and click the top result to open
the System Properties experience.
3.. Under the "Protection Settings" section, select the main "System"
drive, and click the Configure button.
4.. Select the Turn on system protection option.

Just hire a Microsoft Certified Technician and he/she can fix it for you.

Good luck.

It this all Chinese to me since I had Classic Shell on this laptop since day
one. It was like using W-7.

He knew food wasn't allowed but he does it anyway when the "boss man" isn't
there.
Is there some easy to understand way to do a System Restore? And that wont
bring back Classic Shell.

Windows key + pause then in the left pane there are four items with
little shields, click on the one marked system protection, in the next
screen click on the tab again marked system protection, there you can
configure system restore.

Should have added, as Paul said, much better to add control panel in

Sorry.

Start : Run : "control"

Think of it, in a sense, as if there was a "control.exe"
and how would you run it. Once it starts, you can pin
it to the Task Bar so you don't have to do this a
second time.

And "alt-F4" is shorthand for "close". It will even
work on windows which do have the "X", so it operates
in parallel with the "X" being there.
