Default Duplicate COM numbers in Device Mgr

Under the Ports category I was baffled to find two entries with the same number.
COM1
COM3
COM3

This became apparent in one of my programs, where I must select just one.

How can this arise? More important, how can I fix it please?

Who still uses serial ports? Did you dust off that ol' US Robotics Faxmodem?

Ever heard of Arduino? ;-)

My old PCs still have serial port(s)! The last time I used it was back
in 2014 for my external USR Sportster 33.6k Faxmodem! Ever since I
was evicted, I never got a copperwire phone service to use it again.

In case anyone else ends up here with a similar problem...

I had in the past deliberately changed COM numbers by using Device Manager,
right-click on Ports (COM & LPT) Right-click on the target entry Properties,
Port Settings Advanced enter new name.

But I didn't’t do that for this issue as I thought there might be some underlying
problem, which I might make worse. Instead last night I tediously successively
uninstalled the many entries under USB Controllers then restarted the PC. Happily,
so far I’ve had no re-occurrence of duplicates.

FWIW this quirk arose while using a program called Arduino IDE, a tool used to flash
micro-controller chips.

In case anyone is interested, Arduino software seems to be easier to
install and more trouble free on Linux. (of course, some things are
better on Windows. Why would you think you can have only one OS)

Last time I used a modem on the phoneline was about 2014. I was trying
web access on Win 95 and forgot what I was doing 20 years ago to get W95
to use TCP on the LAN.

BTW, USR always reminds me of "US Robots and Mechanical Men Corporation".

Oh, try Windows 3.x. Even worse with Trumpet WinSock, etc. I also had to
use shell accounts with SLIP and PPP (even emulators like free SLiRP and
commercial TIA)!

Heh.
