I have an HP tablet that is running 1709. I have never been able to get it to successfully upgrade to 18XX versions. I have tried many times. I have turned the update off in the registry. Will MS do something to the verson at the end of life, like McKiev did with Family Tree Maker when they upgraded the from Version 2014 version and disable Version 2014 so some functions know longer work. -- 2018: The year we learn to play the great game of Euchre |

You'll stop getting updates. They'll continue to try to wedge you with .NET. In other words, programs will be compiled against ..NET 5, maybe .NET 5 doesn't install on your machine, then you can't run that .NET program you wanted. They could also pull shenanigans like that with DirectX or WDDM driver versions. There are always wedges they can try to work, to undermine your "frozen" version. It's like with video cards, where you're not buying a new GPU, you're buying "6 years of maintenance". That's roughly how long the driver updates last (i.e. your card is still included in the supported hardware list). Everything has wedges. Paul |
