Anyone use Iperius Backup Free Edition?

Hi All,

Does anyone use Iperius Backup Free Edition?

I am looking for

native format,
eMail reports (OAuth support would be nice),
ftp support to a local server
pre and post events

Unfortunately, it does not meet my needs: see
3) and 5) . It has a lot of thought and polish,
it is just not complete. And the workaround for
them is also the work around for Cobian and I
get VSS and Service support for free from Cobian.

My evaluation:

1) The free edition get tech support for free. Doesn't
seem fair.

2) Run as a service requires purchase of the product. Fair
enough.

3) It does not support smtp server that require OAuth2.
(Tech support said it did, but it doesn't. I don't think
they understood the question.)

4) VSS support requires purchase of the product. Hmmmmm...

5) Backup archives are rotated, but in some weird sequence
that makes no sense. The creation dates are all over
the place. A three backup set task: 2 is the latest,
then 3 is the latest, then back to 2, and 2 again.
I have pre-event programs to work around this that
I use with Cobian.

6) Allows for native file backup.

7) Did not test FTP, but it is there in their configuration

8) It allows for one pre and one post event. You have to
write your own script to make multiple calls.

9) You can not append to the log file as it does not let
go of the file lock till after the post events are finished.
And the log files are in UTF16. Good luck appending to that.

10) Their tech support is quite responsive.

11) Their interface is easy to figure out and use.

12) purchase price it reasonable. Desktop edition is 29€

If Cobian can't back up places.sqlite but Macrium can,
which side of the fence do these guys fall on ?

Macrium might not be able to back up Windows.edb (the
Search Indexer database). Do these guys try ? I could see
how the Search Indexer might keep such a file open. After
a restore, flip over to the Search Indexer control panel
and see if the file count is in the low thousands (evidence
it has started over again).

Were you able to "mount" the backup image for inspection ?

I only have one customer this is an issue on with Cobian.

Were you able to "mount" the backup image for inspection ?

I used Native file format. I was able to tools around it
quite easily with Windows Explorer. This feature I adored.

Without VSS support, the Free Version is pretty much useless for
all but minor operations. The desktop price is not
unreasonable.

But, print out the order form and ask the customer to
purchase it and oh boy. They "say" they will and
then grip when the trial expires or say nothing at all
and don't have a functioning backup. "It was working,
why should I buy it?" "I thought the pop up was spam or a
virus." You have to sit on them to buy it.

Macrium MRIMG format, can be converted to VHD (a virtual machine
format). This means several virtualization environments can
repurpose a backup image, it means Disk Management can mount
the backup too, it means 7ZIP can open the VHD and extract
files from it. You can try making an MRIMG in Macrium 7,
then use Macrium 6 VHD converter for repurposing it.

The Macrium mounter that mounts MRIMGs, also allows
"turning off permissions", which is handy for looking in
places like System Volume Information.

If you want to know if a certain file is inside a Macrium
backup, there are ways to find out.

That is a bunch of hoops!

Macrium maybe on my own machines, but it is too proprietary
to use on a customer's "set and forget" machine. I have
already removed one trial of Macrium that I installed
on a customer machine and replaced it with Cobian.

On my specific machines, since Windows are all VM's,
I just backup the disk image with dump.
