Default network adapters

I have windows xp home sp1. When I go to safe mode, go to device manger, go
to network adapters it shows about 10 adapters in it. When I try to
uninstall it says " Failed to uninstall the device. The device may be
required to boot up computer.". I know at least 3 of them are network cards
that is not in the computer. My network stopped working is why I even looked
there. Any suggestions would be very helpful. Here is a list of adapters
that it shows that can not be uninstalled.

Network adapters:
Direct Parallel 5.1.2535.0
D-Link DFE-530TX+ PCI Adapter 5.397.823.2001

Now let's see what your problem may be. I see the many adapters, in the Everest
report. Please look under Settings - Network Connections - Local Area

list what's displayed there. It's possible that unwanted protocols may be
loaded, to start. You cannot uninstall hardware devices that have protocols
bound to them.

It also might help to know exactly what problems you're having with your

adapters. Try and describe what network functions work and don't work, from

I have taken the network card out and it still shows all the adapters in
devise manager. In network connections it doesn't show anything. I still
can't uninstall. It may be a bad adapter card but I still need these out
before I put another card in don't I? Thanks Chuck and sorry about post.
Yesterday was crazy, network down so I couldn't get reports from client
computer to host to send to you. Then A drive went out

Rick / Deb,

If the list "This connection uses the following items:" shows nothing, then
that's part of the problem. The computer won't be on the network at all. My
list shows:
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler (optional)
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Your list of 10 network cards shows, among other things, "Network adapters / WAN
Miniport (IPX)". IPX is a redundant network protocol. If you get your TCP/IP
working properly, you don't need IPX/SPX or NetBIOS.

Try again please. What is in your list? On Sparky? On Rick?

When you physically remove a network card (or other device) from the computer,
before removing the drivers for that card, and the bindings to the drivers, you
are causing a problem. You have to remove things in this order:
1) Interfaces between application software and the drivers ("bindings").
2) The drivers.
3) The hardware device.

Do it in reverse order, and the system gets confused. Put the card back in, the
system tries to load a driver for the new card, how does the system know its the
same card as before? And you get "...Adapter #2", "...Adapter #3", etc.

So start right now, and tell me exactly what works and doesn't.
1) Can you access the internet from the host (Sparky?)?
2) Can you access the internet from the client (Rick?)?
3) Can you share files between Rick and Sparky?

And while you're answering these questions (which admittedly are redundant)
PLEASE don't go pulling network cards out of either computer, or installing or
un installing drivers. If we're going to solve your problems, I have to know
how your computer is setup, and what is working, without you changing things
during the process.

And provide updated ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste entire contents into
your next post.

BTW, THIS is what an IPConfig should look like:

OK, the light is beginning to come on.

So when you had IPX (on both computers?) you had file sharing. Which means that
the network cards must work, and must be properly connected. That's 50% of the
battle right there.

So you have to connect Rick thru Sparky cause you're using a USB modem on
Sparky. Yuck. But it should work with ICS.

Are you running ICS on Sparky ("This computer connects directly to the internet"
and "This computer provides internet service to other computers")? If you were,
the D-Link should have an ip address 192.168.0.1. With ICS on Sparky, and with
both network cards working and properly connected, Rick should get a suitable ip
address assigned.

So get ICS working on Sparky (run the wizard giving the settings above), and
rerun IPConfig on both.

Do you have firewalls on either computer? Now or in the past?

I ran the wizard, still can't share files. The one thing I see different is
the node type on rick say's broadcast. Is that okay? When I go to network to
see if they will share Sparky shows it self, Rick doesn't show anything.
Thanks Chuck, keep plugging away you will figure it out. I do have another
card. It's an old linksys lan card II. I don't think xp has drivers far it
but not sure.

OK, the light is beginning to come on.

So when you had IPX (on both computers?) you had file sharing. Which

means that
the network cards must work, and must be properly connected. That's 50%

of the
battle right there.

So you have to connect Rick thru Sparky cause you're using a USB modem on
Sparky. Yuck. But it should work with ICS.

Are you running ICS on Sparky ("This computer connects directly to the

internet"
and "This computer provides internet service to other computers")? If you

were,
the D-Link should have an ip address 192.168.0.1. With ICS on Sparky, and

with
both network cards working and properly connected, Rick should get a

suitable ip
address assigned.

So get ICS working on Sparky (run the wizard giving the settings above),

and
rerun IPConfig on both.

Do you have firewalls on either computer? Now or in the past?

So far, I don't see that you have setup ICS on Sparky. ICS will let you share
internet service with Rick, plus it will provide network configuration for both
computers, allowing file sharing to work.

Run the network setup wizard on Sparky to setup ICS:
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/networksetupwiz.htm
Or manually, if you prefer:
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/serverbroadband.htm

And post updated IPConfig.

What is the name of the firewall on Rick? On Sparky? This could be important.

BTW, please help me here. You are now producing a nicely formatted IPConfig
from both computers. What did you do differently? I ask because a lot of folks
produce IPConfig like you did earlier (garbled), and I would like to improve my
instructions to they can produce it nicely formatted, as you are doing now.
That would be a big help to me.

Ok here is what happened. I have ran this wizard a bunch of times. I checked
out your artical seen that I was doing it right, ran it again. This is the
first time this has ever happened. It said "an error occurred during
configuration of the network on this coputer. You can configure your network
manully or you can run the wizard again with different sttings". I rebooted
computer tryed again it went through that time. Went to advanced settings
tab, no ics there. Ran the wizard again came up with same error. Went to
setup manully, here is what it said. "An error occurred while internet
connection sharing was being enabled. The service cannot accept control
messages at this time." Here is IP again, rick's is the same as before.

OK, maybe we have a clue. Take a look at the status of the "Internet Connection
Firewall / Internet Connection Sharing" service on Sparky, and make sure that
it's enabled ("Automatic") and running. If it's grayed out, you have a problem.

If no help yet, get PSTools (free) from
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/pstools.shtml. Install the tools
by copying into any convenient folder, and run "psservice c:\psservice.txt".
Copy and paste c:\psservice.txt into your next post.

Your question about report is the first time you told me to uncheck word
wrap. You have to leave it checked to get the report this way. The

firewall
is what came with XP. Do they come with different ones, if so how do I
check?

OK, maybe we have a clue. Take a look at the status of the "Internet

Connection
Firewall / Internet Connection Sharing" service on Sparky, and make sure

that
it's enabled ("Automatic") and running. If it's grayed out, you have a

problem.

If no help yet, get PSTools (free) from
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/pstools.shtml. Install the

tools
by copying into any convenient folder, and run "psservice
c:\psservice.txt".
Copy and paste c:\psservice.txt into your next post.

The choices wern't grayed out but would not let me set any of then.
Your great far helping me this long. Thanks

MP. I'm learning a bit here too.

Here's what I was looking for.

SERVICE_NAME: SharedAccess
DISPLAY_NAME: Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) / Internet Connection
Sharing (ICS)
Provides network address translation, addressing, name resolution and/or
intrusion prevention services for a home or small office network.
TYPE : 20 WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS
STATE : 3 STOP_PENDING
(STOPPABLE,NOT_PAUSABLE,IGNORES_SHUTDOWN)
WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
CHECKPOINT : 0x0
WAIT_HINT : 0x0

State is STOP_PENDING. Meaning it isn't stopped, so you can't start it, but it
isn't running either. You're gonna have to restart Sparky (hope it will shut
down successfully).

After restarting, rerun psservice as before, extract the entry for SharedAccess
(as above) and copy and paste that into your next post. Don't paste the whole
thing again - I can hear the dialup users groaning when they see 1174 lines in
your last post. :-(

As long as the service isn't running, you'll be getting an APIPA address on the
network card - don't worry about that (was that psloglist?).
