Default Speakers don't work but headphones do in same audio port

I have just built a new computer with a gigabyte GA8N-SLI mobo with
built-in audio and I have installed XP and run the drivers disk that
came with the mobo to install the drivers. The drivers appear to be
perfectly fine when I look at the device manager (no warnings or
conflicts) and when I plug in my standard headphones (iPod ear buds was
the closest thing that I grabbed) the sound is fine but when I plug in
my 2.1 speakers (a set of Gateway speakers that I used with my old
comp) no sound is emmitted. I know that there is nothing wrong with
the speakers cause if I plug them into my old comp I can hear
everything just fine. I know that this makes NO sense, but I was
hoping maybe someone came across this problem somewhere and knows the
miracle solution to something small that is driving me NUTS!

You need to use powered speakers. Do your old speakers have a power
supply that plugs into the house power?

Try going to the Control Panel - Souind and Audio devices, under Speaker
Settings go to Advance and select Desktop stereo speakers under speaker
Setup, maybe that will help. If it doesn't then how about re-installing
drivers?

Microsoft is not the answer.
Microsoft is the question.
NO (or Linux) is the answer.

Yes the speakers that I am using are powered and yes they are plugged
in, like I said they work when I simply plug the output cable into my
old computer without changing anything else.

Javi, thanks, I am at work right now and I will try that when I get
home. Then I will let you guys know how it went. I was planning on
dling the new drivers from gigabyte's page when I get home and seeing
if that fixes anything. Thanks.

Despite the fact that your subject line reads "same port" are you sure?

Are you using the same audio source for the test?

Yeah I am definetly using the same port. I have another interesting
twist to this though, I just plugged in the sound card from my old PC
that I had just had these speakers plugged into last night and they
were working fine, and I still get no sound to the speakers. I am
completely lost at this juncture...

Do the speakers have power cords? Some Mobo's need speakers that plug into
the wall. I have some speakers from an old computer that don't have a power
cord that don't work in my new computer but work fine in my old one.

The speakers definitely have power, like i said in an earlier post I
have plugged them straight into another computer and they worked fine,
with the only thing that i changed was plugging the audio out cord from
one PC to the other...

sometimes you have to go back to square one ...
in Device Manager under Sound.video and game controllers it should read,
Audio Codecs/Legacy Audio Drivers/Legacy Video Capture Drivers/Media Control
Drivers/MPU-401 Compatable MIDI Device/Realtek AC'97 Audio/Standard Game
Port/Video Codec/
In Control Panel / Sound and Audio Devices check the Audio/Voice/Volume that
the Realtek AC'97 is selected. You should also have a Sound Effecte Manager
in Control Panel and on your Taskbar to setup and check your sound.

It may be that these options are disabled in the BIOS, these are the
installation instructions for this board it may be worth a look
http://www.gigabyte-usa.com/Motherbo...%20Pro-SLI.htm

also ...check out
http://www.gigabyte-usa.com/Motherbo...adCenter_1.htm

hope some of this helps
