If you "pm-suspend" and it does poweroff after 20 minutes, I told you to
check desktop settings. Did you?

There are no desktop settings...only icons.

I am pleased to announce that the problem appears to have fixed itself.
I upgraded to Mint "Rosa" 17.3 and also the kernel to the recommended
one. I cannot single out anything else that might have contributed to
the improvement. Thanks for your assistance.
