Default I do not have access to the folder a:\

When I try to save a "Word" document to the "A" drive I get the following:
"The parameter is incorrect." When I click on the OK button I get "You do
not have access to the folder A:\. See administrator for access to this
folder. I went to diskmgmt.msc to see if I could sort this out but the A:\
drive is not listed.

Default I do not have access to the folder a:\

Typically "A" is assigned by the BIOS to floppy drives. Do you have a floppy
drive?

Sorry Wes, I assumed the "A" drive was normally the floppy drive. It is the
floppy drive that I can't access. Thanks Ed.

Yes Harry I do have an floppy drive and you were right it is designated as
the "A" drive. The device manager lists the floppy and says it is working
properly. Thanks Ed

This error is normally related to CD or DVDs...
[[You do not have access to the folder 'drive:\'. See your administrator for
access to this folder.]]

If A: is the floppy drive it will not be listed in diskmgmt.msc. Probably
because floppy drives are reserved for A: and B: and you can't change this.

Can you access the A: outside of Word?

With a disk in the drive, type a: in Start | Run and click OK.

Does it open?

You may be right Steve. I recently put this machine together and I wiped the
hard drive with “Kill Disk” to get rid of the partition. In order to
reformat the hard drive I used my floppy to boot Windows 98 drive prior to
installing XP. I know “It worked then” doesn’t mean it works now, but I
thought I’d give it a shot.
Thanks Ed

Try some different disks, not drives. Surely you have some floppies lying
around.

The idea is to determine if that one disk is toast by seeing if your drive
can read other disks.

If your drive can read any other disks that you insert, then maybe that disk
is toast.

If your drive cannot read any disks, then something may be wrong with the
drive.

If your drive cannot read any disks, can it format a blank disk?

Insert a blank disk in the drive.
Open My Computer and then click the disk you want to format.
On the File menu, point to the name of the floppy drive and then click
Format.

Can that disk be read on another machine?

Sometimes floppies created on earlier versions of Windows cannot be read on
XP.

Default I do not have access to the folder a:\

If I put in my old Windows 98 start up disk, and restart the computer, the
drive does read it and boots the computer. On the other hand if I put a
blank disk in and try to format it, it looks like the drive is formatting the
disk (the green bar counts down), but in the end I get a window that says
“Windows was unable to complete the format”. I tried this with a number of
different disks some blank some containing data.
Thanks Ed

That disk may be kaput or there may be problems with the drive.

Did you try more than one disk?

Does My Computer see the drive?

In My Computer with a blank disk in the drive can you right click the
drive and get a menu?

What's floppy disk drive look like in Device Manager?
Start | Run | Type: devmgmt.msc | click OK

Do you see a red "X", blue "i" or green question mark "?"

If A: is the floppy drive it will not be listed in diskmgmt.msc.
Probably because floppy drives are reserved for A: and B: and you can't
change this.

Can you access the A: outside of Word?

With a disk in the drive, type a: in Start | Run and click OK.

Does it open?

Sorry Wes, I assumed the "A" drive was normally the floppy drive. It
is the floppy drive that I can't access. Thanks Ed.

Do not try to save Word documents to anything other than your hard drive and
then move or copy to the "A" Drive. Word saves several files along with the
..doc file.

Thanks Chuck. XP may be different. I use to save files directly to the “A”
drive when I was using ME. As soon as I get this sorted out I’ll try that,
but for now when I try to move a file from the hard drive to the “A” drive I
get “Please insert a disk into drive A:”
