Default Brother duplex printing

I have a Brother HL-1450 laser printer that is supposed to be able to print
double sided. I have followed the directions for setting up duplex
printing, but the choices for that in the Properties/advanced menu are
grayed out. Has anyone run into this. I would appreciate some help.
