Windodws Updates fail to install themselves

Dell C521 64 bits, dual processor
Media Center Edition Ver 2002 SP3

Windows update downloaded six updates Thursday morning, but
only four of them installed. Here are the four that
failed: There was the same error code for all four: Error
code: 0x800710 da:

KB982214, KB981852, KB2183461, KB981997

FWIW, my wife's laptop downloaded and installed eleven (11)
updates without incident. It has Home Edition on it.

I Googled the error code but I can't make any sense of the
two pages that turned up. They have nothing even remotely
similar to what I do.

Any suggestions? I ask for advice here because I consider
the Microsoft Update help only as a last resort.

First - while your system may be 64-bit capable - it is *not* 64-bit in
practice. I know this because Windows XP Media Center Edition did not come
in 64-bit and if you have SP3 - you don't have a 64-bit version of Windows
XP of any flavor.

Download the first one (save it, run it) - see if it installs manually.

in 64-bit and if you have SP3 - you don't have a 64-bit version of Windows

Are any of the following updates listed in Add/Remove Programs? = KB979559;
KB979683; KB977165; KB2286198; KB982381

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(nother) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer?

Did a Norton or McAfee free-trial come preinstalled on the computer when you
bought it? (Doesn't matter if you never used or Activated it.)

FYI: With the demise of Windows Update newsgroup on 01 July 2010, you will
find support for Windows Update in this MS forum now:

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; WinXP 64-bit SP2;

I got those system items by right clicking MyComputer and
selecting Properties. I know that some of my old 98
programs will not run on the MCE desktop while they run fine
on my HomeEdition laptop. Go figger.

Download the first one (save it, run it) - see if it installs manually.

That was absolutely stupendous advice. I redid windows
update, and it reported nine failed updates. Instead of
selecting Express Update I took the other choice. This
allowed me to select a single update. I selected the first
one as you suggested, some cumulative thing, and told it to
install itself.

Then I sat back and waited for the Failed message to come
back to mock me, but surprise! It installed itself! Then,
since I thought my luck might suddenly be running, I did an
express install on the remaining eight. They all installed!
