That is an outright lie. Bill Gates purchased a predecessor version
of MS-DOS from Seattle Computing, and paid them their full price for
it.

Bill and his partners and employees then further developed the product
into MS-DOS and entered into a *non-exclusive per-machine licensing*
agreement with IBM whereby IBM could use MS-DOS but Microsoft was free
to license it to others as well, and to further develop and modify the
product.

That agreement - to license rather than sell MS-DOS to IBM was the one
that gave Microsoft its big start, as sales of IBM PCs (and therefore
the license fees paid by IBM to Microsoft) quickly exceeded the
wildest expectations that IBM ever had for these sales.

And as others have pointed out, the graphical interface was developed
by Xerox Research and both Apple and Microsoft used that research to
develop their own graphic based operating systems. Apple beat
Microsoft to the market with theirs, but Microsoft included backwards
compatibility and Apple did not, which was a major factor in the
success of the Microsoft system. That, and Apple's insistence on
keeping everything proprietary and totally under their control.
