No I didn't visit Avast(I assume you
didn't mean AVG)

However, the problem has returned where it
wouldn't connect and was not responding.

Trying to connect again,...

Is it doing the same thing as before - taking
20 minutes before it connects on your wired
connection ?

You rolled back using a restored backup image,
and you've been busy updating software after that.
Something you've updated recently, has caused
this problem to come back.

Maybe it was a bad boot or something because
I'm connected again with no issues and it was
quick.

All is good but strange huh?

You had said previously that you
thought the 8500 was a quad core
processor and I wondered about that
ever since so I looked it up:

Cool, it is,....

In your two "Tools" pictures, I see Secureline VPN
and it is "ON". That should be a paid feature, as
the bandwidth that a Virtual Private Network
connection uses (all traffic routed through Avast
servers) can be quite expensive for them.

I would try the setup with SecureLine VPN turned OFF
and see if the network icon becomes more normal
afterwards.

I was just showing you what Avast has but I
didn't think it would matter ,...

The 8500 wouldn't connect again or troubleshoot
or restart or shut-down. I don't know if it's
my timing on selecting the User screen (Admin/User)
I click when the tone is just about done or thereabouts.

'Normally', it's perfect and when connected it's
very fast, very responsive. There is no waiting
for anything but others it seems problems crop up
and this connection problem came out of nowhere,
e.g. the yellow triangle with black exclamation point,
the bar graph/sunburst.

So if it isn't in my Windows Update history (otherwise
you would have caught it)maybe it's in MY downloads:

Thoughts/suggestions?

Ahhhhhhhhhhh maybe I do understand
why the VPN is activated. It's because
I have Avast professional, and that may
be included in the package.

However, I 've never used it, like Avast Safe
Zone. I didn't disconnect it I just clicked
VPN.

I think they want money on top of what
you paid for Pro. So you're probably
not running it.

I wonder why it said "ON" in the interface ?

A VPN could change the operational characteristics
of your networking, which is why it came to mind.

I did (3) updates and the 8500 had to be re-started
and came back up normally with no issues.

Agreed, they apparently gave me all
the options but to use them I have to
pay.

I have a feeling I'm mis-interpreting those switches.

It could be they have the word ON, as a command imperative,
meaning you're supposed to move the item to cause it to be
ON. Rather than that being a "status indicator" which
says the feature is on.

So maybe the whole column of them is actually OFF ?

I hate interfaces like that. There are plenty of visual
designs which are less confusing than that.

That's why I clicked VPN to see if
there was a on/off selection I could
make.

I'm still having the connection problem
on the 8500 where it will not connect.
It doesn't seem to respond and I have
restart/shutoff and/or power it off to
get it to run.

It shouldn't be like this. It should come
up as fast and as easily as the 780 without
all this mickey mouse messing around.

For the third time in as many days I
have only been able to connect by manually
pressing the power off button and then
comes back with abnormal shutdown and
then I select normal start-up and then
I get connected.

I shouldn't have to go this route to get
connected to the Internet and risk damaging
my computer.

This time, I'm leaving it on until we resolve
some things.

Robert
