Of course you have an imaging device -- your scanner.

Once you install Fax Services, you will have a "printer" named "Fax."
Simply open the scanned document in the graphics application of your
choice and print it to the Fax.

See http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/FAQFAX.htm for FAQ concerning
installing and using Windows XP Fax.

1. If you "opened" the file -- that is, you can see the scanned image
on your monitor -- there should be a "print" command available. If
nowhere else, it will be on the "File" menu.

2. When you select "print" (whether by clicking on a printer icon or
from the File | Print menu command), you will see a Print dialog box,
where the Printer name should be in a "drop-down box" and will show as
your default printer. If you click on "OK" now, the document will print
on your default printer.

3. Click the down arrow to the right of the printer name, and a list of
available printers should appear. If one of the names in the list is
"Fax," select it, and now click "OK."

4. Follow the instructions in the "Send Fax Wizard" that opens up.

5. If there is no "Fax" in the list of available printers, you didn't
install XP Fax Services. Read the answer to FAQ #1 at
http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/FAQFAX.htm

6. Remember, in addition to installing XP Fax Services, you MUST HAVE a
fax modem connected to a Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) line. You
CAN NOT fax using XP Fax Services with a DSL or Cable "modem."

What happens when you try?

Please describe exactly what you do and what happens, and include the
text of any error messages.

Unless you specifically opened the fax monitor....

(Fax ConsoleToolsFax Monitor"expand the detail
view pane"....)

You weren't seeing the monitor.

But, before looking at the fax monitor, you should report
what's in your modem log, as follows:

Find the modem log:

Control Panelphones/modemsmodems"right click
the modem you're using"View Log.

Take note of the last entry in the log(date & time), and
then rerun your fax attempt.

Return to the modem log, and find your entries at the
end of the log. It will probably begin with something like "Initializing
modem". This will disclose:

1). There actually is a modem.
2). You've got connectivity(aka dsr/tone).
3). You're using the modem you think.
4). The modem is functioning.

Additionally, while you're in the Phone/Modem panel,
it would probably be wise to juice up the dialer volume
so you can hear what's actually happening on the line.

If you've been following the directions in MS KB 306663, did you get to
the end with no errors or other problems? And then you went to the Fax
Console and saw nothing either in Outbox or Sent Items?

Open the Fax Console.

Click on "Tools."

Click on "Fax Printer Configuration."

You should see a window with the title "Fax Properties" with 5 tabs:
General, Sharing, Devices, Tracking, and Archives.

On the General tab, you should see an icon of a fax machine and the name
"Fax." Most of the rest of this tab may be not filled in. What does it
say after "Model:"?

Click the "Devices" tab. What is listed under the heading
"Device Name Send Receive"? Is there a value for TSID, CSID,
and "Rings before answer"? TSID and CSID should be your fax telephone
number.
