12. Why do my Fax transmissions fail so often?

XP Fax is not very robust and is extremely sensitive to type of modem
hardware its used with.

Hi,

What is a "Commswitch" ? Is this VoIP or some other IP based
telephone system ?

ComSwitch is a hardware gadget that honors Distinctive Ring and switches a
single phone line between, Fax, Answering Machine, and telephone.

Will the fax work properly when plugged directly into the phone line?
If so, there may be a compatability problem between the "commswitch" and the
fax function.
On an incoming fax the "commswitch" must do something to trigger the modem,
just as an incoming call would.
Normally, the modem sees the "ring" signal, and after a set number of rings,
answers, and starts the process of fax negotiation.
It may be that the ring signal from the "commswitch" is not what your fax
modem expects and detects.

I am having the original poster's problem. I set up my fax mahine through
FAX Console just the other day. I am able to send faxes ok but cannot
receive faxes. When a fax is incoming I get an error message. To my
knowledge I am not set up through a commswitch but am connected directly to
the phone. Is a commswitch something I would have to buy? Should this work
without a commswitch? I am on Verizon FIOS.
