Default Microsoft life cam show, problems with set up.

I'm not sure this is the right newsgroup but here goes.

Was sent a life cam show by relative and can't seem to get it to work
correctly.
I have installed and re-installed three times and while everything seems to
go ok, at finish things don't seem right!

This is my first try at web cams so I'm kind of in the dark.
After install and opening the web cam all I see is garbled colors.
Shouldn't I be able to see myself in the cam?
If I snap a pic and click edit, I see the same colors when it opens paint to
edit.
I can film a video but can't see it unless I click on the saved file and
then it plays on Windows media player.

Sorry for the longish post but I'm confused.

Thanks
