Each time I boot my computer and go online and, amongst other things,

about, but, yesterday, I updated my AVG AntiVirus Free (which installed
a new version, apparently) and then, today, when I booted up, I ran a
complete scan and it reported ....

Broken registery itemsÂ*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â* 252 items
PC Health problemsÂ*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â* 1 problem
Junk programsÂ*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â*Â* 2 programs
Programs slowing down your PCÂ*Â*Â* 11 programs

And gives a "Resolve" button

Clicking on each of those items gives greater details, e.g. the one "PC
health problem" tells me my registery may be visible to others and the
two "Junk programs" are with *Yahoo!Direct* and *FileViewPro* .

Now, I'm guessing, because I'm using the Free version, it's an all or
nothing situation, but should I be worried??

You are using the free version.
And AVG wants you to BUY a paid version.
So they start scaring you with problems you can only solve with a paid
version of AVG (at least that is what they say).

This is a kind of very nasty commercial.
Ignore these commercials.

better yet, get rid of avast and get a real AV program.

Rene

I'm open to suggestions!! ;-) No brand loyalty here!

I don't use any, I've had too many collisions with programs in one form
or another by one AV or another. Windows Defender and common sense.

IF, I was to use one it would probably be Bitdefender or Kaspersky, But
not likely I will.

I'm glad you haven't had any problems but let me point out that just
because you've used something without any problems doesn't mean it
provides all the security you need. That's like saying you drive
without a seatbelt and you haven't had an accident yet.

Yeah, right, but you might have an accident tomorrow.

I'm not trying to knock either Defender or Spyware Blaster. Just be
aware that they don't remove *all* the risks.

But wrom what I've read, Windows Defender is only for protection against
malware or spyware. If you want or need an anti-virus and have none, MSE
(Microsoft Security Essentials) might be a better fit, since I think it does
both.

You're right of course and that is what I am using, MSE. Getting forgetful.
"Security Essentials. Microsoft introduced Security Essentials to cover the
gap left open by Windows Defender. MSE was designed to provide real-time
protection against a fuller range of malicious software than its
predecessor. MSE defends against malware like viruses and worms, Trojans,
rootkits, spyware and others."

Exactly right! And even if some program removed all the risks, there
would be new risks tomorrow that it didn't remove. Good security
software has frequent updates, but nothing can keep up with all the
new malware releases.

Despite what many people think, malware is not different from viruses.
The word "malware" is short for "MALicious softWARE." It refers to all
types of malicious software, including viruses, ransomware, worms,
trojan horses, rootkits, keyloggers, dialers, spyware, adware,
malicious BHOs, rogue security software and other malicious programs
(see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malware). So there's never any
reason to speak about "viruses *and* malware" since "malware" includes
viruses.

By the way, the word "virus" means "self-replicating software." A
self-replicating program doesn't *have* to be malicious in intent, but
for all practical purposes, all viruses are malicious, and therefore
classify as malware.

In general, there are two kinds of anti-malware software--anti-virus
programs and anti-spyware programs, but there other more specialized
programs too. At a minimum, everyone should have one anti-virus
program (you should never have more than one, because doing so can
adversely affect your performance and cause problems as they clash
with each other) and one anti-spyware program.

*running at once*; there's little disadvntageous (and some advantages)
to having two or more, _if_ you wish. (I currently only have AVG.)

, because doing so can
adversely affect your performance and cause problems as they clash
with each other) and one anti-spyware program.

(I think same applies to A-S as to A-V softwares - don't _run_ more than
one at a time, but _have_ as many as you like. [In both cases, depending
how well they obfuscate their signature information, each may _report_
the others as evil.])

Yes, of course. Although I didn't say that, I thought it was clear
that that's what I meant. But your clarification doesn't hurt.
