I need to restore the XP system from the original disks that were created
when XP was installled on a friends laptop. Any advice on the procedure for
doing this?

You want to restore your host using some rescue discs that were created
on your friend's installation of Windows. Do they have the same version
of Windows as do (did) you? Do they have the same license type (OEM
versus retail)? Does your friend have a branded (e.g., Dell, Gateway,
or whatever) or a generic install of Windows? If it is a branded
version, it may not work on your computer, especially if you don't have
the same model as your friend (even if you have the same brand) and even
more likely a problem if you and your friend don't have the same brand.
Rescue discs to place an image in a partition already have the drivers
added for THAT hardware for which those discs were intended.

Did you actually have Windows installed before on YOUR host (and now
want to wipe it out with a fresh copy)?

As Bill mentioned, an image restore will place a factory-time image in
the partition on the hard disk. That means you lose tweaks,
configuration settings, data files, and user-installed apps (so you'll
need all those app install discs, too).

Thank you for the response but I must not have been clear. I would be doing
the restore on his laptop, which is where the restore was created. His
system was compromised in such a way that he was led to delete files that
were essential. Hence the need to restore. What I am looking for is some
guidance in the procedure that I should follow to accomplish the restore on
his laptop using the disks created on his laptop.

I have already pulled off what he needs to retain so the machine is ready
for the restore. Does the restore happen automatically when I in sert the
first restore disk?
