There is no $$$ justification for building single-function machines.

A printer just prints. A copier scans in order to print. Add a USB port and
some firmware, and you can use a copier to print. Add more firmware for
the scanning and you have 3-in-1. A single driver will handle all 3 functions.
So why make three separate machines? The reduction in warehousing,
inventory tracking, shipping, and invoicing costs more than make up for
any increased manufacturing costs.

A good point if a) you send faxes, b) you don't already have a good
scanner, and c) it's for home use, starting from scratch 3 in 1 are a
good option.

OK the price of one is negligible, especially in the UK, but my
Yorkshire roots for careful money management go against buying
something which has something I already have.

Of course, for specialised business and professional use that makes perfect
sense. However, OP complained he could find only 3-in-1s, which suggests
he wasn't looking in shops that cater to business/enterprise clients. He also
referred to a "reasonable price", which I saw as a clue that he wanted a
mass-market printer. His requirements weren't clear enough to be sure
about that, of course, but I thought it would be useful to comment about
why 3-in-1s are proliferating in what appeared to be his price range. It may
be he wants a business quality printer for a mass-market price. Ain't gonna
happen.

Sorry about that, should have added that it's for home use, not high use
just the occasional document and photo print.

My HP Photosmart D5460 has served me well over the past 10 years or so
but the drivers are totally screwed recently, they still print but the
settings from the likes of Word are buggered, just looking for a
replacement when the carts run out.

of course it does.

Er, I haven't seen a copier without a scanning mechanisms and a sheet
feeder in donkey's years.

the topic is printers, and there are a *lot* of printers without
scanner mechanisms.

Where do you shop?

bad advice.

Good advice (practice proven).

laser printers are not always ideal or even desirable, especially for
photos, and there are many very good inkjet printers.

Read the part about photos in the article!

Yeah. It says if you want to print photos don't even try to use your
laser jet. Take it to someone else. Good advice too.

Did you read the article at all or did you just jump to an opinion.

Me too.

I have a Brother laser printer for six years (95 euro in 2013).
I can confirm all points of the article.

I just ordered and received a toner cartridge (31 euro).
I do not print much so this will last one/two years.

Mine lasted something like ten years. It is nominally spent, but it is
still printing Ok.

My previous inkjet printer would dry out and need to be cleaned whenever
I needed it, unless used every two or three weeks. And often had to be
cleaned with alcohol, it was unable to fully clean itself, because some
jets were clogged. So whenever I needed to print something important it
needed working at it for an hour or two. And then the cartridges would
run out. And they were expensive. I learned to refill them, much
cheaper, but it would clog faster.

Come laser. Years and years it would just print instantly when needed,
with the same cartridge, till spent. Well, before it is fully spent it
smears a bit. So, print a page a month, it works. Print a book or two,
it works. It just works when I need it.

It turns out cheaper than ink in the long run.

That has been my experience, also.
I've had several color ink jets over the last few years and the
cartridges dry out unless used every few weeks. The majority of
my printing is B&W and I use the B&W laser for that.
I still have 2 ink jets for the occasional color prints but will
be getting a color laser soon and throw out the ink jets.

I have two printers. The work horse is a +12 year old OKI C5600 which
shows no sign of wearing out. THis is not a laser printer but uses
LEDs. It used to be my work printer and has done some 30,000 copies
and shows no sign of giving up. I currently have an A2 size Epson P800
which I use for photograph. Before that I had an Epson Stylus 3800.
They don't do that much work as these things go but I have never had a
head clog. Mind you, I always let the printer shut itself down, during
the course of which it parks the heads in a closed damp enfironment.

To be fair, that's probably good advice even if you have an inkjet, what
with the likes of shutterfly (etc.), or even an office supply/copy
store being reasonably inexpensive -- I mean, less so than buying that
"photo black" cartridge that dried up, again ...

sounds like a low quality inkjet printer

It wasn't. It was pretty expensive and good at the time.

i didn't say anything about its price.

anything that clogs that often is low quality. some would say junk.

Every inkjet clogs by just leaving it unused for some time. The time
varies. A week, a month, a year.

another problem is turning the printer on/off via its own power button
versus power strip. using the printer's power button causes the printer
to properly park the heads on the waste pad. using a power strip (or
any external on/off control) will skip that step, leading to a head
clog.

I know. I always use its own power button.

don't assume all inkjets are like that. they definitely aren't.

So whenever I needed to print something important it
needed working at it for an hour or two. And then the cartridges would
run out. And they were expensive. I learned to refill them, much
cheaper, but it would clog faster.

no surprise there. why did you continue refilling them given that it
clogged faster?

Because doing otherwise was prohibitive.

no reason why would would be, but the point is that your clogs were
self-inflicted.

But they were. 60€ a cartridge, would print less than 100 pages. Rather
50. Less if used for a page at a time, then unused for a week.

And originals would also clog, only that later.

photos on a laser printer do not have anywhere near the colour gamut of
an inkjet printer nor can a laser printer be properly calibrated so
that the colours are even accurate.

So what? I like them. The price per photo is right at big size. Fantastic!

Don't buy machines that offload processing to the computer (I'm not sure
this is the case, though). Typically known as "winprinters". If the
manufacturer stops doing the drivers, you are goofed.

For instance, if the printer does postscript or pdf natively, chances
are it will keep working for ever.

No--true. It is one of the most often posted problems with inkjets.
Printers try to mitigate the problem by running automatic "clean" cycles
that can blow through your ink when not printing pages. Power off the
printer for extended times where these "clean" cycles cannot occur and
you will discover how imperfect the seal is on the rubber booted capping
station.

If you print basically documents a monochrome laser is very cost
effective. Especially if you print very infrequently, a cheap laser will
be much cheaper.

Color lasers are less so, but produce great quality graphics.
Affordability depends on your usage.

If you need photos a dedicated photo inkjet is questionable depending on
your circumstances. If you print them occasionally getting a WalMart or
Kinkos do it makes far more sense, unless like me where it is a long
trek to the store. (I suffer with an OfficeJet as a result)

When it comes to photos, how good they are depends on the particular
brand and model. Some are much better than others.

Since I almost never print photos, I don't care.
