Default Can't Change Default Programs

Windows 10 Home Premium 64 bit
I tried to change a default program today and was unable to do so. My
default browser has changed to Edge and I am unable to change back to
Chrome. I am trying to make these changes with the Default App
software in the settings menu. My first thought was to reboot, but
that did not fix the problem. I also tried right-clicking on a file
and using the open with option to chane the default. This worked in
some cases, but the icon for the file still shows the old app even
though it opens with the new one. I need help trouble-shooting and
repairing this problem, but don't know where to start. Any
suggestions?

There are essentially two ways to set your default browsers. I have
attached a picture to show you both ways. Please tell us whether you
have tried both ways.

Default Apps

There is a third way and that is to launch your Google Chrome and it
prompts you to set it as default but tell us what exactly have you
already tried.

Good luck.

It's possible the action is in

HKLM\Software\Clients

I traced it down by using Sysinternals Process Monitor,
then playing with Default Apps, to see what it was changing.

That is, of course, not the only thing it changes. It also
messes about with file extension mappings, for which the
shorthand is "FirefoxURL". The keys shown in the
picture, in my view, are the "main" controls. But
not the only controls.

Since my account was a member of the Adminstrators group,
I think I had permission to modify the key(s) in the example.

I installed Thunderbird, specifically so I could have
a second example. Firefox was already there. The Capabilities
key seems to mark the "victor".
