Default "Administrators Only" When Try to Update XP

When I try to manually perform the Windows XP Update, I get a screen
saying that only Administrators can do this. I am the only user of
this computer and the User Data icon on the Control Panel identifies
me as Administrator. I can install new programs, but I can't do the
Windows Update. I've followed the instructions on the error message
sheet but that doesn't work. I've looked up Microsoft Knowledge Base
Article 316524, which deals specifically with this problem. I've
followed the instructions there so many times that I know them by
heart. Yet I still have the problem. My computer is getting more and
more out of date and I don't know what to do about it. Microsoft has
given me a case number but seems to have forgotten about me. Any
suggestions?

Look in %windir%\Windows Update.log for clues.

What kind of clues should I be looking for?
