Virus Scanners (Free)
Since MS virus scanner is going away, can folks here compare and
contrast the various free virus scanners he (e.g. Avast, etc.) I tried Avast some time back and it had some annoying fetures. But maybe that comes with the free stuff these days. Eary free Avast did not have those annoyances. --- news://freenews.netfront.net/ - complaints: --- |

Just go through it and use only what you want. I guess I don't understand the problem. I use Avast protection but not for the email or websites, just the File System Shield. I only use the bare minimum of its services, one of which is auto updating of its defs but manual updates of its Program. I also set it to "Silent Gaming Mode" (rt clk option on taskbar icon) which stops almost all of Avast pop-up reminders, etc. -- Buffalo |

Where do you turn off auto program updates vs defs updates? Is there a link where I can download once and then install all to my PCs on my LAN without having to fiddle? As I remember when I used Avast years ago I had to register an eMail address for the free version for each PC. So when I roll from room to room I can have my window to the world all ready and not have to take a laptop with me. --- news://freenews.netfront.net/ - complaints: --- |

I don't know about the different PCs problem -- Buffalo |
