O.T. - Backup Software
I have a Dell Dimension 8200(Seagate Barracuda 7200 HD 160Gb)
with XP, SP3, with Spywareblaster, Avast, and Windows firewall. As I live on a marginal, fixed income could anyone recommend any free back-up software programs that I can download ? Thank you, Robert |

Lower left corner. http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx Download is from CNET. Take the installation step slowly, to avoid toolbars and crap software, whatever they're offering this week. The last time I visited the cnet site, there was no "direct link" offered for that download. Just make sure you're not ticking any boxes that should not be ticked, and you'll be fine. It'll cost you a blank CD, for the boot CD you need to make. Macrium provides a boot CD. Test to make sure it boots, before getting too excited. Paul |

Paul How is this better than a System Image (and repair disc) made using the built-into-Windows-7 utility - or, are we talking about backing up the data partition rather than the system one? It's about the same functionally, to Windows 7 built-in System Image. Not all OEM Windows 7 installations have a working System Image. My Acer laptop, some added backup software, when they installed it, it "broke" all the buttons in the System Image panel. It's since been fixed, once I blew away the Acer OS and installed using a downloaded Windows 7 installer DVD and a license key from the COA sticker on the bottom of the laptop. If for any reason, your System Image is broken (and VSS service is still running), you can try the command line interface. This is an example. See if this program is available (wbadmin). This command, would be backing up a total of four partitions, and storing them on N:\ . wbAdmin start backup -backupTarget:N: -include:,F: -allCritical Macrium does both backups, as well as now supports cloning (as of version 5). And it can even resize a partition when it's cloned (implying, it isn't an exact clone, from a definitions point of view). Still, a useful second function, that avoids a bounce off an external disk. It saves a step, if you want to move a partition. Paul |

If you have the complete XP Home CD, find backup on the CD, in \ValueAdd\MSFT\NTBACKUP and install it yourself by doubleclicking the file ntbackup.msi. If you don't have an XP CD, you can download ntbackup.msi at http://www.onecomputerguy.com/software/ntbackup.msi Also see http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=302894 |

ASR is not supported on home edition. IF you install NtBackup from the CD to the Home Edition, ASR functionality will appear to work fine during the backup session. Since the setup does not support ASR in the home edition, there is no way to initiate the ASR restore in case of a disaster. If you need to restore from this session, install Windows XP manually and then restore from the ASR media. 2. Backup to CDRW If you decide to backup to a CDRW, you cannot target that device directly. You must create a backup set of 650MB or less and backup to a file. After the file is complete, copy the file to the CDRW. Please refer to the readme for XP home edition for additional notes. |
