Tony Cooper:
I think most Americans understand that there are some Americans with
the first name of Earl. For no other reason, in some cases, than from
watching the (then) popular television series "My name is Earl"...

Older people would also remember Chief Justice Earl Warren.

I have, of course, heard of all three, but only Earl Scruggs came to
mind at the beginning of the thread.

There are probably others I haven't thought of too.

There's also the song "Goodbye Earl" by the Dixie Chicks, a redneck
misogynist who gets "disappeared" by his put-upon spouse and her friends....

The significance of the name there is that it instantly identifies the
subject of the song as "trailer-park people"....r

Let's not forget the 1962 pop song "Duke of Earl", which reached No. 1
in the Top 40 ratings in the U.S.

Today, I wouldn't rate it in my Top 3,000. But in 1962, it influenced
the cultural development of the leading edge of the Baby Boom
generation. Without it, who knows what the world would be like now?

I can't forget it, because I don't think I've ever heard it. g

I stay as far away from "pop songs" as I can.

Once you've heard it, you'll never forget it. A particularly vicious
earworm.
