There might still be some laptop drive manufacturing, not being done by the two companies. I don't know if there is much else going on. They've pretty well concentrated the whole industry under their respective tents. This article is from 2016, and a quick glance at this tells you what is left. Toshiba is still a thing... Even though at the current time, Toshiba is selling stuff left and right, to fix the nuclear meltdown in their financials (Westinghouse?). http://www.anandtech.com/show/10315/...down-q1-2016/2 Paul |

Seagate had something to do with acquiring HDDs manufacture from, I think, Control Data. That was back when CDC started divesting itself of various branches of its conglomeration. Seagate acquired Conner Peripherals (founded by a prior Seagate co-founder but Conner never produced any drives until they merged with CoData) in 1996. http://www.nbcnews.com/id/10558135/n...about-billion/ Seagate acquired Maxtor in 2006. http://www.nbcnews.com/id/10558135/n...about-billion/ Seagate acquired Samsung in 2011. http://www.pcworld.com/article/24663...usi ness.html In 2012, a flood prevent access to their Thai plant so Toshiba had to move the production load to their existing China and Phillipines. https://www.storagenewsletter.com/20...i-hdd-factory/ Because of this, Toshiba and WDC agreed to have Toshiba-brand HDDs manufactured at WDC's plant. So is a Toshiba-branded HDD really still a Toshiba HDD or did it become a WDC-manufactured HDD with a Toshiba sticker? Depends on in which plant the Toshiba-branded HDD was made. http://news.softpedia.com/news/Toshi...s-255666.shtml HGST (Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, a merger of IBM with Hitachi) was acquired by (became a subsidiary of) WDC. *Seagate acquired Western Digital in 2014.* https://www.storagenewsletter.com/20...named-seawest/ What saved consumers from getting stuck with the poor quality Seagate HDDs (up to around 2008) was that the acquisitions continued using their existing production facilities. I never kept track of what Seagate did with their own production facilities after the acquisitions. The one in my metropolis went away about 2 years after they acquired Maxtor. My guess is Seagate got out of the manufacture seat, bought up the others, and let those companies make the Seagate-branded and other-branded HDDs. You can see a graph of the demise of brands at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o..._manufacturers The graph is not up to date. WDC was gobbled up by Seagate back a couple years ago. Toshiba acquried OCZ. Now WDC (who already acquired Sandisk) is trying to buy the NAND division from Toshiba, especially since both use co-facilities for manufacture. *Remember who acquired WDC?* https://www.forbes.com/sites/tomcoug.../#653a8c735e9b https://seekingalpha.com/article/406...isition?page=2 But it looks like Foxconn wants a piece of Toshiba's NAND pie: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-t...-idUSKBN19D093 (also see the seekingalpha.com article above) That's the only rumor that I've heard so far about Toshiba's chip production assets. Haven't heard what's going on with their HDD plants. |
