There's a difference between what's on the left of your
desktop, and the folder it uses in Explorer.

Paul, you've lost me!! I know ... easily done!

If I open Windows Explorer, it doesn't show a "C:\$Recycle.Bin"

You need the "maximum visibility" options.

There are three tick boxes that control stuff of interest.
You can adjust these as you see fit. The ones I've highlighted,
will cause desktop.ini files to show on your desktop, so
the settings are not "ideal" from a visual perspective,
but I like the settings because I can see everything.

The security certificate on this site is currently busted.
I granted a temporary exception in my browser, so I could
use the site.

*******

Files have permissions and attributes. It's the attributes
that affect visibility properties in this case. You can
see some of mine have a lock symbol, and that's a permissions
issue of some sort.

The "dir" command supports attributes. And it's rather
clumsy as far as I'm concerned, as a "real" command would
simply list all the files, with three columns for A (Archive),
H (Hidden) and S (System).

dir /? # for more information
# while working in Command Prompt

In addition, the "attrib" command allows changing the
attributes of things. A person could (clumsily) modify their
$Recycle.Bin using "attrib", until it was visible with
ordinary commands. But, would the OS leave it alone ?
Dunno, and I'm not going to test that :-)

attrib /?

In Australia, back in the 50's-60's, the Boy Scouts had a fund raising
program called "Bob-A-Job", where they'd mow your lawn for a Shilling

Cannot say I've heard of it recently .... and it would cost you a damn
sight more than a "Bob-A-Job"!!

Even if that wasn't the case, sharing -vich wouldn't imply common
ancestry (other than just having ancestors from Russian-speaking areas);
like the Scandinavian -ssen, the English -son, the Irish O', the
Scottish Mc-/Mac-, the German -ssohn, and so on, it just means "son of".

To save others looking: it's a tickbox under "Properties" from the

If you have more hard drives or partitions beyond C, you will find a
Recycle Bin for each. You will have to change the folder options to see
them. On each, select [Tools Folder Options]. Select the View tab on
the Folder Options window. Uncheck the checkbox for "Hide protected
operating system files (Recommended)", confirm that choice, and select
the OK button.

When you open, for example, C:\$RECYCLE.BIN, you may see several folders
all named (again, for example) "Recycle Bin". They all have the same
contents. However, when you open each of them, the complete path and
file shown in the address area of Windows Explorer are different.

David, as I typed in reply to Paul, in Windows Explorer I see only one
"Recycle Bin" at the bottom left of that screen. Clicking it shows icons
for all 205 Files and Folders in the Recycle Bin. I cannot see how to
differentiate which files/folders are on which of my three partitions,
C:\, G:\ and H:\

If I right Click on (several of the) icons, I have the option to select
either "Restore", "Cut", "Delete" or "Properties".

See my first paragraph that you quoted.

Noted first time around, David .... but, as I don't see any "Tools"
clickable, either on the Win Explorer screen itself or by Right Clicking
after having selected one of the partitions, I cannot select the "View
tab" on the "Folder Options" screen.

Just see the Recycle Bin at the bottom of the Win Explorer screen.

at the bottom left of the Win Ex screen, it does list (just one)
"Recycle Bin" and, if I click on it, it shows all 205 File Folders and
Files in the Recycle Bin, i.e. just one Recycle Bin for my three
logical HD's, C:\, G:\ and H:\.

(I'm not Paul, but have you turned on "show hidden folders" (or
something like that)?

Yes, I had previously selected "Show Hidden Files, Folders and Drives"
under Folder Options-View. (and this is what David E. Ross was wanting
me to do ... but already done!!)

But still, no individual Recycle Bins for each partition! Just the one
at the bottom, left of the Win Explorer screen!

If I open a CMD Windows, I can cd myself up to the C:\, and then cd
C:\$Recycle.Bin,
so I can ...

Quote
C:\$Recycle.BinDir
Volume in drive C is C:\
Volume Serial Number is nnnn-nnnn

Directory of C:\$Recycle.Bin

File Not Found
End Quote (would have been easier if I could have Copied from the
CMD.exe window!!)

1. I think the CMD window also doesn't show hidden files by default. Try
switches - "dir /ah" might work, for example.
2. You _can_ copy from the command prompt window, just not quite as
normal (e. g. with Ctrl-X/C/V). [Well, you can't cut, but you can copy
and paste.] Click on the symbol at the top left (left end of title bar;

used to.

Thank you. Cannot say I've ever had to do it that way .... but I had
been able to do it somehow!!

So then I tried to CD into the "Recycle.Bin" and then the "Recycle
Bin" sub-folders of "C:\$Recycle.Bin", but both times I got "The
System cannot find the path specified.".

What an I doing wrong??
Daniel

In such circumstances, I've _sometimes_ found "cd C:\x\y\z" actually
gets me there, even if the system denies that say y exists. (But it _is_
tedious, especially if the names are awkward; using "command prompt
here" from Windows Explorer, once you've turned on the hiddens, is
probably easier.)

As with most things, "there is more than one way to skin a cat", but
don't worry, there's no need to call the RSPCA or whatever.

I normally "cd.." several times to get to the root directory, then "cd
C:\A", "cd C:\A\B", etc. Just so I know where I am!!

Thanks

Spot on, John!! Well, I thought the "ovich/ovic" was "son of", but near
enough.

And I think Irish "Fitz" fits in there as well, i.e. Fitzpatrick == son
of Patrick, Fitzmichael == son of Michael, etc.

I also visit the Defaults menu, right next to Properties, to enable

On the Windows Explorer (NOT Internet Explorer) window for any folder
and for any drive or drive's partition, the top line is the Title Bar.
Below that is a bar with arrows and the Address Area (which shows the
path to the folder). Next are the Menu Bar and then the Tool Bar. The
Menu Bar has File, Edit, View, Tools, and Help. The Tool Bar has
buttons that can be customized.

You want the Tools menu on the Menu Bar, not anything on the Tool Bar.
The Menu Bar has "Map network drive", "Disconnect network drive", "Open
Sync Center", and "Folder options". You want "Folder options".

cd\

And you don't need the C: if you're staying on the same drive

that too, quite often), you can get from C:\ to C:\A\B by just

c:\ cd A
C:\A cd B
