Win8.1 with Bing
I have a tablet running the above OS, and it's not received the Win10
update KB. I've checked for updates; none waiting. I've restored hidden updates; just Skype. All my desktop PCs have got the KB3035583 installed; both Win7 and Win8.1. Ed |

My Win8.1 + Bing (Wimboot) tablet seems to have a recovery partition that has the compressed Windows 8.1, but also some specific drivers for the screen etc. fudged in there. In addition there are some drivers outside the Wimboot partition. My guess is that, unless you are a genius, it won't be possible to do any sort of standard upgrade to W10. I think the system manufacturer will have to build and offer W10 as a complete re-installation option. But I'm just guessing. -- Bill |

Win8.1 with Bing is a stripped-down version offered free to OEMs. Not to individuals, though. No upgrade to Win10 for them. MS do "free" only once! Ed |

Mine is a netbbok, rather than a tablet, I had a choice to buy a 32GB eMMC version (which presumably would have used WIMBOOT, or a 320GB spinny disc version, which I did, then replaced it with a 64GB SSD). |

Ed It is available to individuals on OEM pre-built devices (usually smaller form factor). The offering on Win10, like Win8.1 w/Bing is the offering for tablets and devices selling at lower price points. The cost to OEM's very, very low. ....and just like Win8.1 w/Bing it will be a monetized user experience for services instead of up-front fees. The Win10 w/Bing also takes into account that once the free for first year upgrade expires for Win7Sp1/8.1 devices then MSFT can still continue to provide a cheap way for new users to obtain Win10 (but on lower price point devices). -- ...winston msft mvp consumer apps |

So it's more of a mess than I thought. Presumably, if yours came as a none-SSD device, it can't be a Wimboot version because the rust wouldn't spin fast enough. I hadn't realised there were none-SSD versions of 8.1 w Bing. So, with 10 we will be able to add RustyBing and solidBing to Education, Enterprise, Business, Pro, Home, Mobile and so on. The last blog I saw seemed to imply there would be dishwasher and cooker versions as well. -- Bill |
