Default What the heck?XP Taskbar got too big

I've used this laptop for years. XP-SP3 Pro. on a Lenovo T43. My taskbar
was always one line (about 1/2" wide). I installed Thunderbird 38. My
taskbar became2 lines wide. I unlocked it. Used the double arrow to make
it smaller. It refused. Iwent into toolbars, disabled "Quick Launch",and
was able to make taskbar the normal width again. But the minute I want
to enable "Quick Launch", the taskbar doubles in size again, even with it
locked. I removed the Thunderbird icon from it and evan another unused
icon, and I still cant enable QL without my taskbar getting too wide.
WTF?
