Default Unable to connect to .NET Messenger Service

Xref: kermit microsoft.public.windowsxp.messenger:68306

-----Original Message-----
Thanks in advance. I've seen this posted elsewhere, but
problem persists.

I was using Windows Messenger 4.7.2009 on 2 different XP
machines. Was working beautifully! Then got a message on
one that upgrade to MSN Messenger 6.1 was available. I
installed it and have not been able to connect with any
Messenger program on that machine since, receiving
message "Unable to sign you into .NET Messenger Service
possibly because of a problem with the service or with
your Internet connection. PLease make sure that you are
connected to the Internet". My internet connection is
just fine and so is my .NET password - I can sign
directly into Hotmail with no problems. My other machine
where Messenger was never touched is still running
perfectly.

Here are the steps I have taken on the problem machine:

- Tried and failed with MSN Messenger 6.1, also tried
5.0, and now back at Windows Messenger 4.7.2009. Each
time, completely removed application or Windows component
involved and rebooted between tries.
- Deleted all cookies and temporary files.
- Ran Windowsupdate to ensure no outstanding critical XP
hotfixes available. There were none.
- Deleted all .NET/hotmail password information from
machine.
- Changed password on Hotmail.
- Doublechecked all IE advanced settings as per an
earlier posting. All good - not checking for revoked
server certificates, using SSL 2 and 3.

One additional observation: If I go into Control Panel,
User Accounts, pick my administrative and password-
protected account to change, the click Set Up My Account
To Use A .NET Password, then the wizard starts to add
a .NET passport to my XP windows account, then I click
NExt, I get the following error message: "The Wizard
could not connect to the Internet, or the Web Service
returned a wizard page that is not valid." I'm not sure
if this is directly related to the problem but sure
doesn't look right.

Cheers and thanks again
Alan
