No direct charge to your wallet when you download Linux, sure, but someone's paying for it. Donations and corporate contributions from companies like Redhat, Oracle and IBM do. In the end, the license of it means that people who develop for it know that they are doing so without any guarantee of compensation. How did/do they acquire the funds? The odds are fairly good that some of your personal cash flowed/flows into that wallet. Only if a government contributed to the code which doesn't happen all too often. The aforementioned companies put their money into Linux because they got something in return. For some, it was the permission to use the kernel into some of their own projects (like Google), for others, it was the permission to use the existing software to sell a service like Redhat. It's in their best interest to aid in developing the software. -- Charmed Tuna |

Nowadays, it seems that fewer and fewer actually work properly. It might be because this laptop makes use of UEFI, but it shouldn't be a problem at all. As for free vs. open, I prefer to use the term free. Open suggests that it shares the code but isn't necessarily free of charge whereas the term free indicates a freedom to use, share, modify and copy. Linux is free software. Well the kernel might be free, but many distributions carry stuff which isn't free. So if you say free then you mean something like gnusense, or maybe debian. Free and open mean different things. They might carry non-free stuff but it is also not open. I suppose that you're referring to the binary blobs like the NVIDIA drivers. Even when distributions aren't fully-free like GNUsense or Trisquel, most of the code is. The difference is that these _free_ distributions completely restrict access to any kind of blobs whether their code is open or not whereas Debian, for instance, supports repositories which have proprietary code. Not only that but the kernels GNUsense and Trisquel use also remove non-free firmware from the kernel and use Linux-Libre instead of the typical Linux kernel. -- Charmed Tuna |

Regards, Rene No. No, it's not. Go open a Windows-10_whiners newsgroup. You go boil you head Bucky. I've had to discard two perfectly good scanners in going from win98 to winxp then to windows 7. I did not upgrade, I never do, just purchased new machines. You might argue that this was a vendor problem, they just couldn't be bothered to update their drivers, but that doesn't help me much. Of course, that vendor is off my list (Visioneer). There is no good reason why software should cease working due to later processors. The other day I booted an old DOS floppy on my 64 bit dual processor machine. You can be THE PRESIDENT IN CHARGE of the whiners newsgroup I now mainly use Linux, not sure if similar problems exist on this platform but so far so good and at least I have choices. Who fuukeen cares? You make my point. : He is one of the oldest trolls in any news group be it windows road runner ect you name it. Yeah, he originated with road runner, then started morphing to other nyms and NSPs when he'd get TOS'ed and then come again with the same tired old shtick his mama taught him when he was in an all girl's retarded rehab skool back when he was young before psychotropics were invented and the Regan administration let him out on the streets again due to budget considerations. Now the only difference is you can smell him approaching because of his over loaded geriatric doodie-diapers. : Ed Mullen writes: It's a niche market as the penetration has proven over the last ten or more years. Have fun all you users but it'll NEVER be mainstream. It's been around for, what? ten? Fifteen years? And it's where, market-share wise? Nowhere. Call any (major or minor) PC manufacturer and ask them what the overwhelming percentage of OS's they install on new machines. It's Windows. As this is a Windows 10 newsgroup I will confine myself to saying that the lack of market share is because Microsoft aggressively pushes Windows, and because people don't like change and don't want to adapt. Thanks for sharing. Windows 10 has all the market shares because sooner or later everyone will by neccessity be using Windows 10. Resistance is futile. -- I AM Bucky Breeder, (*(^; and, It's like Yogi Berra, RIP 9/22/2015, always used to say: "The future ain't what it used to be!" http://i.imgur.com/f193YWS.jpg?1 |
