Help setting up Thunderbird

TB won't ask you for a user-id and psw until you try to access the NNTP
server successfully and request the list of NG(s) to subscribe to and
make selections. It will ask you at that time, and it will also ask at
that time if you would like to save the user-id and psw permanently.
This is if you have the settings set correctly to access the NNTP
server.

It also does the same thing for POP3 and SMPT that is ask for the
user-id and psw when you have successfully accessed the email server
the
first on those protocols.

from time to time, and it will ask for them when you try to access a NG.
The rules I don't bother with as they are weak for sure.

you can delete user-id and psw for Pop23, SMTP and NNTP and reset for
new entries.

I have been getting returned messages now and I can't figure out why. I
think I will stick with Outlook for the email. I do prefer TB over Agent
7 for Newsgroups.

I use TB for Earthlink and Google email accounts with no problems, along
with NNTP and the MS Bridge program that allows me to access MSDN Web
site forums with a NG reader.

Did you let TB auto configure email account access? I did that with
Earthlink and Gmail accounts with no problems accessing and using either
of my email accounts. TB did everything on its own, except for me having
to give the user-id and psw during this auto configuration.

I was getting returned emails at one time, as I recall after an update
of TB or something. I think it had to do with TB not being able to logon
to the email server with user-id and psw given and emails were returned,
because they were never sent.

Below is where I went to delete the entries for user-id and psw that
forced TB to ask for user-id and psw at the time of sending email, which
also gave the option of saving credentials permanently.

Ken, I'm on SeaMonkey (which you would be aware is related to TB!!, sort
of TB + FF), and I was going to suggest Al check out the
mozilla.support.thunderbird news group on the mozilla news server, too,
but then I realised he was having troubles with getting a news server
set up, so probably wouldn't work.

However, Al, not all is lost, as I think the mozilla.support.thunderbird
news group is carried by Google-Groups!!

Odd - I didn't have a problem with newsgroups.

The only problem I encountered with TB was a direct result of port
blocking by my IP. The IP blocks the standard send port, except for it's
own Email server.
My options were to receive directly from any Email accounts and send
only from or thru the IP Email server, use non standard send ports (if
available), or setup a strange double login type of access that uses the
IP send mail server, but logs in to it using it's login, then send using
the non IP email server login and email address.

Somewhere on the TB website, notes, etc. were instructions on how to
setup manually to do this.

For other than the Mozilla groups: try connecting (e. g. to collect a
list of 'groups) to the server you've chosen (assuming it's a valid one)
anyway; a box should pop up asking you for a password (with a "remember"
