The point is, for the basics, you should *not* have to resort to the
Internet for the information. Apple and Microsoft should provide that
as a minimum to get new users started.

You're running an OS years out of date and complaining about OS X?

I'm not complaining about the OS. I'm complaining about the lack of
printed documentation available for the new user when they take the
shiny new computer out of the box for the first time.

This is not 1985.

Really? No wonder I missed the parade!

Once again, in case you skipped the reply a couple paragraphs above, I'm
not complaining about the OS.

Yes you are.

English must be your third or fourth language.

The issue is no documentation of any type, regardless of OS or software
program.

Also, almost everyone would rather NOT have thousands of help files on
their computer when they can get them easily off the Internet. Sorry
that *you* don't like it, but you are in a tiny and insignificant
minority.

Stop acting like a Linux junkie, and think of people besides yourself.

Sorry, but YOU are the one who is thinking only of yourself. As I said,
and you ignored, people do not want to have thousands of help files on
their machines.

OH... So, you are saying no one wants all the help files, that already
exist on the computer, on their computer?

No company is going to print manuals in this century.

The first intelligent thing you've said. OH!! My apologies, I should
be really, really technical so you'll understand. The first intelligent
thing you've written.

Not printing the entire manual is perfectly fine *if* decent printed
matter were supplied to get a new user going. Even an experienced user
exploring a new type of software for him/her. The complete manual could
be a file on the computer (if applicable) or on an optical disk.

Absolutely true. A Unix shell is about as similar to cmd as a
thoroughbred is to a rocking horse.

Sure, but so what?

So you have a very powerful tool available.

But if you don't know to use it, what's the point of owning it?

Any command shell is only as powerful as the user's knowledge and skill.

Ah, I recognize the nym-shifting ****head. What a moron.

Ah, I recognise a frail ego.

Can't do the attributions properly either.

General note for youngsters: a one- button mouse is better than the others
for people with arthritis.

The G4 came with a one button mouse.

Maybe bluetooth is slow for you,

it's slow for everyone.

bluetooth is about 2mbit/s real world compared to gigabit speeds for
802.11ac. that's several hundred times faster.

not everyone has 802.11ac (yet), but even 802.11n is over 100x faster.

but it works fine for me whenever I want
to send an individual file without the need for a cable or network.

that's what wifi is for.

I think bluetooth file transfer is "just broken" on iOS, and I think you
actually know that, since you're not as stupid as you sound.

bluetooth file transfer is not broken.

bluetooth file transfer is *not there* because it's a complete waste of
time when you can transfer something over 100x as fast over wifi.

Weird. My only use for Bluetooth on my iPad is to use an external keyboard.

LOL!!!! Lewis finally drove me over the edge. As for the others, there
were things they were right about, I learned I'd been given erroneous
info years ago. So all in all, while they may come off not so well
here, I'm reserving any judgments of being trolls at this point.
Leaning towards they really aren't. I ended up getting some help from
them, so it was worth my time. :-)

The conversations about the mouse with Wolf is a time period long before
me and my real Mac experience.

Quick follow-up, I just spent 2 hours teaching a lady some of the basics
that I think should be in the docs I'm talking about. She didn't even
know how to copy and paste, when I asked her what operating system she
had, she said Safari. I've been teaching another lady that knows how to
use Ms Access the same kind of subjects using Vista.

Just try telling me again that basic documentation isn't needed.

I honestly think that those folks who are so staunch in their opinion
that documentation is not needed, have lived most of their lives in an
environment where having computers was the norm for that location. They
may have never lived anywhere else to know all the world is not the same.

Take Michelle, who thinks/thought I am/was full of it about my first
computer. I may be full of it at times, but not about that. LOL The
store was K & K Electronics, XXXXXXXXX, Colorado, USA. My friend's name
is Brant. After I bought the computer, an Atari 800, he would come over
and we would play Empire of the Overmind, loaded from a cassette player.

singing "Those were the days, my friend, we thought they'd never end.
We'd sing and dance, forever and a day." LOL

It is surprising how many people don't know cut/copy/paste.
I thought that was a big part of the computer revolution: The
end of White Out.

I guess a lot of these problems come from the nature of
the functionality. With Apple fans there may just be
defensiveness, but Linux people are worse. Programmers
will do a great deal of work on some software but then
write no docs at all. Why? "I hate writing docs." Sometimes
the brightest programmers are the least literate and
least socialized people. They really *can't* write docs.
They can't even speak properly, with language skills
stuck at age 13. (Even Bill Gates uses "super" like a
teenager says "awesome". He's clearly not dumb, but
one could hardly call him articulate.)

I think the ease of use is also an obstacle of a kind.
In the days of DOS people needed to be trained. Today
the tool is even more complex, but it seems easy because
the UI is so slick.

A third issue is that most people are not comfortable
thinking linearly, and much of what can be done with
computers requires some of that. Especially the docs.
It's not just computers. How many people do you know
who can assemble a bookshelf or sofa from Ikea? It's
not complicated, but most people just can't stand to
do the kind of linear thinking required to read the
directions. *Very, very few people ever even think
to look for help files with software, making the writing
of those files a thankless task.*

I have a brother-in-law that just retired a few months ago from a
medical equipment company. He'd been with the company since it was
formed, and worked the Help desk.

He actually had a woman call in 3-4 years ago, and thought the optical
drive was a cup holder. I couldn't believe it.

I guess a lot of these problems come from the nature of
the functionality. With Apple fans there may just be

Ever look at those instructions? Usually, those things are just
pictures any more. And people think those are more "intuitive". I
always think of the old GUI wars where everyone thought their GUI was
the most intuitive.

It's
not complicated, but most people just can't stand to
do the kind of linear thinking required to read the
directions. *Very, very few people ever even think

Some more of the same lack of a beginner's point, simply being taught
for Windows software to press F1 for the help files.

As you haven't got any work-able solutions since you posted on 2nd
August, the conclusion from this is that you can't do it and so your
best option is to pack-up and throw away your electronic devices and go
and live with Taliban fighters in the remote caves of Afghanistan.
Before you do this, please post a final message so that all the nutters
here can shut up and refrain from posting anymore rubbish here. This is
after all a Windows newsgroup but idiots have started talking about Macs
and Linus systems.

Your post has generated more rubbish than at any time up to now.
