speaking of "issues" - wordpad "unable to create new document"
Windows has done it again: broken a perfectly functional program. Wordpad in this instance. I 'ported' a copy from Vista because well, The New And Improved Version which came with Windows 7 suffers from Microsoft's feeping creaerism and feature bloat. But neither version work. The program called wordpad, and the program called write - both give that "Unable to Create New Document" popup. Any suggestions for fixing this? Or installing a small program which does what Wordpad did (handle rtf files, without the ribbon, without the default proprietary font*, etc)? Nerts - I don't have time for this. tschus pyotr *yeah, "proprietary - MS is the only company which uses this, and the default font can not be changed. -- pyotr filipivich The question was asked: "Is Hindsight overrated?" In retrospect, it appears to be. |

I haven't tested this. LibreOffice tends to steal file associations, and can break some of your other Microsoft tools (WordViewer docx translation). Test in a VM, to keep your main OS clean initially... HTH, Paul |

Wordpad/Write are basically a simple front-end for the Microsoft RichEdit window which handles RTF text. RichEdit dates back to at least Win98 and has come out in a number of versions, with a number of file names. This is part of the story, but it's out of date: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/lib...=vs.85%29.aspx I think there have also been versions that only came with MS Office. There was even a version with NT4 that was the same file and version as the one for 98 and the two would break if they were in the wrong place. The only way to tell the difference was by file size! RichEdit is the consummate DLL Hell. Given all that, it's worth checking what it expects and whether it's finding that DLL. I'd run Process Explorer, then start Wordpad and see if it runs into a problem. |

The New And Improved Version which came with Windows 7 suffers from Microsoft's feeping creaerism and feature bloat. Only if it is used by an idiot. But neither version work. are you surprised? How can a vista version work in Win7? The program called wordpad, and the program called write - both give that "Unable to Create New Document" Then you should seek advice about how to fix this. You can't do it by copying something from Vista or WinXP. Any suggestions for fixing this? Yes. Remove that copied file and then create a new profile in 7 and then launch WordPad that originally came with 7 to see if it works. the new profile is virgin and so unlikely to be corrupted by you. -- With over 500 million devices now running Windows 10, customer satisfaction is higher than any previous version of windows. |

RichText is Microsoft's RTF format. It's a specific file format. Wordpad and Write are compiled programs that wrap a RichEdit window, which is a standard Microsoft Windows component for handling RTF text. "Rich Text" also seems to be a term that's become used for any implementation of editor functionality in a webpage, allowing one to add formatting, colors, etc via HTML. You seem to be finding the latter while he's looking for the former. |

My guess is that you're not copying the "wordpad.exe.mui" too, which is stored in other folder. Try using the 32-bit version of the Wordpad from Vista. i.e. copy the one from the "Program Files (x86)" instead of "Program Files" folder from Vista. I don't have 64-bit version of Vista, but it works this way. FYI, I'm using the one from Windows XP (32-bit), instead of Vista. |

| Interesting, didn't know the history of RTF. For me, "rich text" is an | *.rtf file. Any wordprocessor I've used could/can read an *.rtf file. | It surprised me, too. Microsoft RTF and the "rich text" term go back a long way. It looks like the Linux people may have come up with the same term by accident, using it to describe font options in a textbox. But what really surprised me was that the Microsoft version is not the popular version when I do a search. So plain text is what goes into a webpage text field, while rich text is HTML-wrapped text with font family/color/weight/size options, created dynamically using script in a webpage. |
