Github is a repo facility. You're not confusing it with Git are you? Git is open source. GitHub is a hosted repo company. There is also a free open source Git repo called, GitLab. GitHub is the popular, social place to share opensource software. It is a private company. If Microsoft wanted to change the TOS to reflect ownership of somekind, the user-base would likely just leave and use GigLab more extensively. -- Peter Kozlov |

I see so much linux stuff on Github I thought it was primarily that! |

If you can't hire people that think If all you care about is the corporate instantaneous stock price If you can't innovate to save your lives If you can roll it and sell it to idiots who are your trolls you've made your corporate ethical (profit) directives If you can buy and suppress emergent technology you must do it to prove you are strong, in charge, and a monopoly **** Microsoft They may hassle, try to suppress, even win a battle or two (where do you think Windows NT, "New Technology" came from anyway?) against Open Source. Well, knowing how crafty free software developers are, I doubt that they'll see this as anything more than a setback. Besides, the software ON Github doesn't belong to them even if they buy the site. |

You don't understand. All that Microsoft wants, is the contact info, the "phone book". They don't give a rats ass what the site does. For an example of this, look at the purchase of LinkedIn. What did they do with that asset exactly ? They paid billions for it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LinkedIn "As of 2015, most of the company's revenue came from selling access to information about its members to recruiters and sales professionals." They'll do the same thing with the Github registration info. "John Smith knows Python, and here is the proof." And of course, they'll send spam emails offering "Get Office 365". Because you know the people on Github are really hungry for stuff like that. It's like Microsoft is buying a bowling alley, because it "likes the smell of the shoes" :-) Paul |

Them's wrongthink! If a company would like to keep their code secure but still use git, they need only employ gitlab internally. There is no need for them to us github. What they wish to share with the world could also be used via their own gitlab. Microsoft would only gain another social media company, like LinkedIn. -- Peter Kozlov |
