Default Windows 8.1 update

I recently had a pop-up that indicated the new Windows 8.1 update was
available and I should download/install it. I went through the process
but I cannot find any evidence that it has installed.

I'm running this on a nearly new HP Pavilion that came with Windows 8
preinstalled. It has worked very well and I have no need/reason to
update to 8.1 but thought maybe I should do so, just to keep abreast
of things as they developed.

How do I find out if this update installed successfully, and if it
didn't, how do I go about getting it downloaded and installed. My
computer seems to be working very well and I have no reason to suspect
that something is messed up. What gives??? Gordon

Hold down the Windows key and press Pause|Break. It will tell you
there what version you are running.

Rene, are you talking about Windows 8 or Windows 7? I can't find any
"This PC" to right click on. Gordon

Thanks, Ken. That pop up tells me that I'm still running Windows 8,
not Windows 8.1, so I guess the download/install jumped the track,
somewhere. It seems to have downloaded okay then asked me if I wanted
to save or run this download. I selected run and it got under way but
nothing else ever happened. Now I can't find the download file nor can
I find a site to do another download. Gordon

"This PC" is how your "C:\" drive is labeled in after the Windows 8.1 update
is installed. IMO, the update to 8.1 is well worth-it. To update your
system, just go to the App Store and you'll find the update there.

Did you get your previous "update" from the Windows store? If not, I'd
wonder what was actually put on your computer, and if so, I'd hope it would
be possible to get it again from the same source.

"This PC" is how your "C:\" drive is labeled in after the Windows 8.1
update
is installed.

No, it isn't. C:\ is contained within "This PC" - formerly known as
"Computer" (Win7) and "My Computer" XP.

Of course, a lapse on my part. Thanks for the correction.

Not. Although people will be forced to "upgrade" in 2015 or lose support
which is a bunch of BS.

I have no folder(s) in the taskbar. I nothing that opening results
in showing computer to right click on.

I do have - open file explorer, right click on This PC, click on
Properties. And, of course, the keyboard shortcut mentioned by Mr.
Blake.

Help me out here... what are you talking about?

What I posted is for Windows 8. My mistake since I guess 8.1 is different.

Nope, it's the same in this regard.
