Can one add a program to the Open With window?
Actually I've 2 questions:
1. Subject question. On a rare occasion I've hoped the program or link I needed to open a program would be in "Open With" though at the moment I can't recall an example. But what I've written here will explain why I asked the question. 2. The programs or links in Open With are put there by Windows or by application programs I install, correct? |

Can one add a program to the Open With window?
Yes, you can add a program to the Open With list.
Right click a file, point to Open With and then click Choose Program. Programs lists the programs that Windows has registered. Click the program you want to use to open the selected file. If the program you want is not on this list, click Browse. Open With--Recommended Programs list Under Programs, click the program in which you want the file to open, or click Browse to locate the program you want. Open With--No Recommended Programs list Under Programs, click the program in which you want the file to open, or click Browse to locate the program you want. You can also type a comment that provides information about the file type. This information will appear in the folder window under Details when you view the file in a folder. To ensure that Windows always uses the same program to open the file, or any other file with the same file name extension, in the Open With dialog box, select the Always use this program to open these files check box. Browse button [[Click to choose another program. You'll be able to browse through the folders on your computer.]] Always use this program to open these files [[Specifies that the next time you open this file, or any other file having the same file name extension, you want Windows to use the program that you specify here.]] If the program you want is not on the list or on your computer, you can look for the appropriate program on the Web. [[Click this link to search the Internet for a program to open your file. The link connects to the Windows File Associations page on the Microsoft Web site. In trying it out, I came up with this related question. I have Macromedia Flash Player V 7.0.19.0 on my computer. It shows up in Add/Remove for example and in C:\Program Files...In Program Files it is an exe program: Macromedia Flash Player 7.0 installer.exe. And I am wondering this. If I am correct that the purpose of an .exe program (especially when called an installer) is to install the actual program, how can it be expected to OPEN an swf file? |

Can one add a program to the Open With window?
wumply,
I do not have the POS, Macromedia Flash Player, so I don't know what the ..exe file is, never mind, I found out what it is. SAFlashPlayer.exe is the Macromedia Flash Player. Do a Search for SAFlashPlayer.exe on your machine. No, an installer file cannot open a .swf file. IrfanView will also play .swf files http://irfanview.tuwien.ac.at/ EXE is short for Executable. An executable file is basically another name for a program. Virtually all programs that run under Windows or DOS are in the .EXE format. For an .exe file that is an installer file, the file is compressed or zipped and is self-extracting. This type of file is designed to run and perform an install just by double clicking on the file. Called a Self-extracting Archive. -- Hope this helps. Let us know.
