We have spare HDDs in the computer, but want to turn them off between use, without powering down, to make them last longer and to save some power. External drives have slower data-transfer rates, though we use these for off-site backups. It's incredible that Windows can't do this simple thing! Do you know of any modem with the ability to "filter in" fax numbers? We are bombarded with junk faxes. We'll pay anything! |

You don't have to do anything but not access the drive for a set period of time before it automatically turns off. The same option is in XP as well. |

Three replies have it explained it. All you have to do is implement it :-) Have a faxing facility which allows blocking of junk faxes? (like email & newsgroups.) No. That's usually a function of the fax modem. Do you know of any modem with the ability to "filter in" fax numbers? We are bombarded with junk faxes. We'll pay anything! **** Most fax machines have the ability to block incoming numbers, and I would think any number of fax modems also, but I haven't worked with modems in a number of years. In order for the fax machine to be able to block, you have to have caller I.D. enabled on your phone service. Then the number can be added to the Block Junk Fax list in the fax machine. I know of no machine that will arbitrarily block faxes like junk email filters do with a particular content since a fax machine doesn't "read" the fax as it's coming in. Possibly a fax service would have that function. Call your phone company and see if they have anything like that, or if they know of anyone in your area that does. -- SC Tom |

The same option is in XP as well. But this is for *all* drives no? If I have three HDDs in the computer bays and I want to turn 2 of them on/off at varying times *without rebooting* can I do this with Windows7? I have my main HDD, and two others for backups/photos&movies, the latter two I access occasionally. I want to turn on/off these latter two without having to turn off the computer. Can Windows7 do this? |
