Default Desktop Icons Missing

A few icons on the desktop don't show up! Bit If I go to the desktop icon on
the systray and scroll down I can find the missing link. These links
(folders, files, images etc) are clearly there in Windows Explorer but don't
show up on the desktop screen.

Any help appreciated

Try renaming the icons databse file. It is located at this link:

C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\IconCache.db

Then restart the machine to see if a new file is recreated and solves
your current problem.

Replace Username with your actual windows profile name

Try any of these:

- click on an open area of the desktop and hit F5 to refresh it.

- click on an open area of the desktop, right-click, and change the
View | icon size options. You can change them back later if you want.

- click on an open area of the desktop and change the Screen
Resolution. You can change it back if you want.

- reboot.

Often, I see this problem when icons somehow are moved off the edge of
the area of my monitor screen. Here is how I fix it.

First, I capture a screen print of my desktop so that I can later
restore the arrangement I have.

Then, on my desktop away from any icon, I right-click and select from
the pull-down context menu [View Auto arrange icons]. I repeat that
to cancel the request for automatic arranging.

Finally, I use the screen print to restore the arrangement I had.

Oops! I forgot. It is possible to hide icons that would be on your
desktop, but they are not hidden when you view your desktop via Windows
Explorer. I have hidden three icons and deleted two others for data
objects that Windows thinks everyone should use but I never use.

I found it necessary (win7pro) to adjust the icon sizes so that their
grid would match the screen. The steps we

Control Panel; Personalization; choose Windows Classic; then see
the old, complicated menus for adjusting all windows parameters,
especially Icon sizes, fonts, horizontal and vertical spacing.
